My co-worker just informed me that http://www.tv-links.co.uk/ is now permanantly shut down and it's owners were arrested. I'm trying to get him to send me the link to the news report, but it looks like everyone can take that one out of their favorites now.

Did anyone really NOT expect it? I mean they took it a step further than anyone else and actually promoted the wholesale distribution of copyrighted content. Tvlinks was bad. Vewy bad.

i read this the other day on the BBC as i do not know the UK laws in this matter please explain to me WHY providing LINKS is wrong?

he him self is not hosting any of the material, he has zero of the material on his servers all he provides are links to places like youtube and what not. so why is he under arrest and why are his servers being taken down?

someone from the UK please educate me on your laws in this situation.

yeah i just caught it after i posted. still does not answer my question about the law, and it also asks the exact same thing i did. why was he arrested for doing nothing against the law. providing a LINK is not breaking the law, at least not in the US, so what is the LAW in the UK?

In law, there is a thing called an accomplice. It means you didn't commit the crime directly, but you facilitated the maleficence in some way. While I can't say for sure it applies to copyright violations, I'd bet the grounds for termination of the site and his arrest are based on something very similar.

stubs is the US or UK law? as IIRC in the US that does not apply to web pages unless the links are for stealing data.

Laws are made up as the legal system sees fit anyway. Hell, you get enough people on the bandwagon and enough big companies backing it, you can make anything illegal.

Next thing you know you won't even be able to tell someone what happened in a book you read because that will be "copyright infringement" or something.

still does not answer why he was arrested and his site taken down. that is why i ask what the laws are in the UK.

i do not agree with the actions, but IIRC this also happened to the pirate bay a few years ago, and guess what? they are back up and out of jail and more powerful today then they were before the cops raided their servers. the laws in that country are different then they are in the US. i do not know their laws, i do not know the laws in the UK, so i again ask those of you in the UK what are the laws for providing links vs hard data?

Europe is the most hypocritcal, self righteous place around it seems.

pirate bay is based in Sweden so obviously they'll be governed by different laws than the tv-links website. Sweden's lack of copyright laws gives the pirate bay the ability to do what they do. politics i think was to blame for the time they were shutdown. the law carried out the shutdown, but only because they were pressured to do so. i think that's the way it went down, don't feel like researching to be sure, so please correct me if i'm wrong.
