Explosion levels Irvington house

An explosion in Irvington this morning leveled a three-story house, sparked fires in adjacent homes and left authorities scrambling to rescue people trapped in the rubble, authorities said.

The blast near 21st Street and 20th Avenue shook surrounding houses at 7:30 a.m. and left a strong odor of gas wafting though the neighborhood, authorities said.

"We've got a report of people trapped in the debris pile," said Irvington Deputy Fire Chief Charles Weiss.

Erica Holmes, 35, lives on Ellis Avenue, near 20th Avenue, and said the blast shattered several windows in her home.

"It sounded like something crashed into the house. It shook the whole house," she said.

It's a damn shame, since you can't fit an family of 9 into an Iroc-Z while sorting out the insurance paperwork.

Had that happen around here about 10 years ago. Somehow, they managed to catch their oil or propane tank on fire and boom went the house and the neighbouring house. A year later, I ended up renting out the house next to the one that blew up. Considering the size of the new house they built, I'm not convinced it wasn't an insurance fraud.

CNN TV update: one person dead, three injured, and there is still a dangerous level of gas at the site. The explosion blasted debris to two or three blocks away. The headliner on CNN said "Two houses explode". I'm still waiting for an article to be posted on CNN.com.

BREAKING NEWS: One Dead In N.J. House Explosion

POSTED: 8:44 am EDT October 19, 2007
UPDATED: 9:45 am EDT October 19, 2007
TRENTON, N.J. -- One person is dead and several are injured after an explosion in Irvington, N.J., leveled two homes Friday morning, officials said.

Emergency crews responded to the scene. Authorities told The Star-Ledger of Newark that the blast sparked fires in adjacent homes and people may be trapped in the rubble.

An official said in addition to the fatality, four people were injured. Four of the five victims were construction workers, and all were transported to nearby hospitals.

Footage from the scene showed a pile of smoking debris where the home apparently once stood. The windows on nearby homes were shattered and shards of glass littered the street.

Mayor Wayne Smith said the explosion may have been connected to an intruder.

"Very preliminarily, we had a newly constructed house that was supposedly going to be closed on next week," said Smith. "It looks like someone broke into the house and was trying to remove pipes and copper. It appears that they may have broken a gas line while trying to remove those properties."

The explosion near 21st Street and 20th Avenue occurred around 7:30 a.m. and left behind a strong gas odor.

Irvington Deputy Fire Chief Charles Weiss said people are reportedly trapped in the blast that neighbor Erica Holmes says shattered windows in her home.

A tip for copper pipe thieves: don't steal the GAS pipes, you morons.

I would also like to know where these guys get their money. I know copper is worth some $$, but where do you go to unload the stuff? Not that I plan on stealing copper anytime soon.

Bout 12 years back I worked at this small Printing/film company, Across the street was a small low end appartment complex of 4 units. I was working in the camera room when the whole building shook with a tremendous bang! Rushing out to the front I found everyone standing in a daze and all the front wondows blown in! No one was hurt. What I did see was a leveled apartments across the street. Smoke rising up into the sky. Seems some guy decided to end it all and turnd on the gas to kill himself. What happened is that the gas ignited and the whole complex went Boom!
