The Wii is Silent.Follow

I was just thinking about this and I noticed there's actually an IGN article for it.

It really sucks that the Wii doesn't have microphones and headsets! With online play, I love how on the 360 you just plug a headset into the controller, but that wouldn't work with Wii games that require the Nunchuck, and plugging it in there would be retarded anyway.

The Wii has built in Wi-Fi, and it has 2 USB ports on the back. Unfortunately for me I use both of those already, one's for the wired connection because I'm out of date and don't have a Wireless router, and the other plugs in the LED/cooling fan stand which helps keep it from overheating in long play sessions.

Any speculation on how they can add voice support to the Wii?

I still hate the friend code system. It should have totally had something similar to Xbox Live's frontend for communicating and setting up game matches.

[Edit]
I forgot to mention, Wii Remotes connect to the console via Bluetooth so there's no technical barrier for Nintendo to release a first party Bluetooth headset for online gaming needs.

Think about this.

Battalion Wars 2, Mario Strikers Charged, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and other future games for the Wii featuring online play, will currently LACK voice chat support. I am HOPING that Smash Bros was pushed back to February because they want to release a Bluetooth headset in the meantime.

I'd be wanting MOH:Heroes 2 for the 32 player online multiplayer, but it's going to bomb if you don't have voice chat. I would be happy to see that game delayed as long as possible so they'll come up with a solution.

Really though, I don't want to go online with my Wii at all if I can't communicate with my teammates and/or opponents.

I do find it ironic that I'm bringing this up since it has little bearing on me personally, as I only have one friend who owns a Wii. Everyone else has a 360.

The Wii overheats?

The system at launch had problems with overheating when connecting to WiiConnect24 service such as when using the consoles Opera browser or playing early online games like Mario Strikers Charged, because a glaring technical oversight; for some odd reason the system's fan turned off when the internet turned on.

I believe this has been fixed and new Wiis coming out don't have that issue. However, the point still stands that the Wii only has one fan out of the factory, the bottom vent lacks one so the console doesn't get optimal airflow like you get when you have an 'in' fan and an 'out' fan.

I bought a 3rd party stand for my Wii that lights up with blue LEDs and has a fan for the bottom vent. I admit I mostly got it for the LEDs, it's kind of like having case mods on your PC.

Oh and even now, if you do like I do and play metroid prime 3 for 13 hours straight because you're off work that day and have no plans, yeah the Wii can get pretty warm. I doubt it would overheat though. I liked the thought of adding some longevity to my console by keeping it cooler.

Why would you want to browse the internet from your Wii? Smiley: confused Also, the blue light from Wiiconnect24 is ******* obnoxious. I'll update my system when I turn it on thanks.

13 hours. Man, I wish I had that kind of time for playing Smiley: smile

I'm not a fan of microphones. Case in point, the other night when I was playing Warhawk some fucktard kept blabbing nonsense in his microphone non-stop for the entire 30 minute match. Then when the next match started, he continued. I had to mute the voice sound so I could enjoy my game.

The light from WiiConnect24 can be turned to bright, dim or off settings. I like leaving mine to update itself so that when I want to play I can just turn it on and it's ready to go.

Browsing the web from the Wii is mostly just a neat trick the console can do, but one time my computer crashed and wouldn't get back to windows and being able to look up the solution online via my Wii was a lifesaver.

13 hours is unusual for me but I had just bought the game and I was off work that day and the next. Voice chat is often retarded in totally public matches of games like Warhawk and Halo, but especially in examples like Gears of War 2 player co-op over Live or playing a private match with your friends, of course you'll want to have voice chat.

Personally Nintendo would save me a lot of scratch if they'd let my Motorola bluetooth headset connect with it, since like I said the console has the hardware for it.

I did some research though and found out that every Wiimote has a voice/audio chip unit thing in it but they just haven't been activated through software yet. Games like Smash Bros Brawl may have been pushed back so that they can get that working. I'd still prefer a headset than screaming at my remote into a mic that may or may not hear me worth a ****.

From my exp with the 12 year old's screaming and cussing on Xbox live I think the lack of voice chat is a good thing.

The problem is that everyone on the internet is a pedophile. Or at least, that's the basis of Nintendo's online strategy.

This is not a joke. I can almost guarantee that "protecting the children" is a major part of their reasoning behind this.

I hope that SSMB is headset-capable. My linkshell is organizing some huge matches between us all, and having voice chat would be sweet.

SSMB doesn't allow communication, period. Well, that's not quite true. If you're playing against people you know using those awesome 16-digit friend codes, you can exchange generic preset messages using the D-pad, such as "I'm winning!" If you're playing against strangers, even that option is cut, in case the child molesters develop some way to touch children using only coded combinations of banal phrases.

I had great hope for the system at launch, but as more and more about its online play is announced, it makes me kinda glad I got a 360 for more "mature" games, along with decent online play, even if it does cost. Nintendo really needs to wake up and realize its not 1990's anymore and people want decent online play, with voice chat to talk **** on in after game lobbies.

Nintendo is awake; they are just aiming at a wider demographic, one that includes a large population of casual gamers. Many of whom do not have headsets, or are younger kids whose parents don't want them to be cursed out.

There are not even any scheduled games that will really make use of voice chat. Voice chat is most useful during large team play games, like many FPS. Currently Wii has Elebits and Mario strikers charged online. Neither goes above 4 players total. The same will be true for SSBB; at max you can have three people on one team.

well i still think having to make a conference call with your friends over cell phones or something is a retarded way to go.

Like people have stated, we have children as young as ten and twelve on Xbox Live swearing at each other, so there's nothing Nintendo is dodging by not featuring voice chat.

Hell the Xbox 360 has voice chat and now they released a ChatPad attachment which adds a mini keyboard to the remote. That must be SUPER handy for Xbox 360 FFXI players.

Anyway, the Wii does need voice comm.
