I use Mozilla Firefox but over the past month or so I randomly get pop ups from IE while I am on. They also install desktop shortcuts and put new links in my favorites. Its getting really annoying already. I have Spybot: Search and Destroy and Norton 2004 and run them both periodically but this problem wont go away. I also have tried deleting IE but it doesnt get deleted for some reason. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

You're lucky.

I have 2 IEXPLORER.exe processes running even when I'm not on the Internet. They take up around 15k memory each.

I also have some sort of search bar that pops up once in a while along with a screensaver advertisement.

I wish there was capital punishment for popups, spyware, adware and all that ****.

Grab Spybot, Ad-Aware, and AVG Anti-Virus. I think you can get them at Download.com. AVG is at grisoft.com

Turn off all background apps, close IE and Mozilla, run the programs and update everything so you are running the latest version of all 3.

Then run each program, and fix all of the spyware/adware. Make sure to run AVG to make sure your computer is not affected by a virus.

Other than that, a full reformat should do the trick!

I have all those besides spy-bot.

I just downloaded a new service pack update for Windows XP.

It came with amazing pop-up blocker, and this security control thingy.

It says that AVG reports that it might be out of date.

I updated my AVG completely, and it still says that.

Also...how different is Spy-Bot from Ad-Ware?

Ok I just donwloaded Spybot.

I read tutorial, immuninuzed, yada yada yada.

I went through the Search, and came up with some Spywars stuff.

I went to fix them, and when Iw as almost done of the fix, it comes up with a pop-up saying:
"Can not continue fix because file WDENGINE.dll (something like that) is not present. Re-installing Spybot may solve the problem."

I tried re-installing it, and I came up with the same message...anyone know whats wrong?

for some of those persistent problems i have found that pccillin's online scanner does well with virus and spyware that some local applications can't fix.
