Okay, please don't flame this thread just yet.

I have been tricked by the English language once again, or so I believe.

You know that in a noun you put either "a" or "an" infront, right?

[A] [h]ouse.

[An] [a]pple.

But what about NPC?

A NPC

or

An NPC

I'm confused here.. give me your best guess.

it a NPC, NPC being an abbreviation for non player charecter i assume, so a non player cahrecter, rather than an non player charecter

However, if you expect them to say the shortened version (incorrect, imprpoer, and done by yours truly all the time,)

"An Enne Pee See"

Actually, this isn't incorrect.

It's entirely appropriate to pronounce acronyms as their letters, rather than the full version.

In this case, "an" is appropriate when preceeding a vowel sound.

As it turns out, my wife teaches grammar and I've learned a LOT over the years.

An NPC. The "a" or "an" is dependent upon the vocal sound of what follows immediately. If what follows begins with a vowel sound, then "an" is correct.

Hence, "an en-pee-see".

Thanks for answers..

The paradox had me trippin' for a couple of hours.. an NPC, a NPC..

I can see that it should be a NPC because of the N.. But still, that sounds stupid, doesn't it?

So, got that one straigthened out :)

Overall reason is that normally its a for consonant.. and an for vowel.. but in the case that the first letter sounds like a vowel than you can use an. also.. when the first letter starts with a vowel that has the sound of a "Y".. like a union, a united front, and a one-legged man

No... it should be "an NPC" - I though we cleared this up.
