My mom has been a Jr. High school teacher for over ten years. She would probably not even be able to support herself alone, let alone a family.
It's a very sad thing that so much money goes into killing people rather than education. Teachers are some of the best people in the world, period.
Years ago, I used to work as a cook and also as a bartender. Teachers are amoung some of the cheapest, petty ******** you can ever serve. People used to call in sick on nights that a teachers group would be comming in. My mom was also a waitress for some years before she became a nurse. Teachers are notoriously cheap as tippers.
My Democratic State Government cut a bunch of funding for our schools and as a result, my school district had to cut all field trips for the rest of the year, and that happened in November!
Our government priorities need to be re-evaluated. It seems like right now they are more concerned with everything that is not going on in their country. I can understand why a war-on-terror must be fought, but I just can't appreciate it, because the costs of doing so have also brought down things that are, IMO, more important.

Seems like someone actually didnt GET the article here. Could it be because lack of funding for teaching is letting people like him slip through the cracks?
My mother has worked for over 30 years as a teacher. She has a Double Masters in special education, and she STILL has to work 2 other side jobs just to make ends meet. It's sickening that the people who are in charge of teaching our future get so little to live on. And now they are cutting back even more? It makes me sick

it is not just california either.
my first grader has a list of things she needs to bring to school for classes. art supplies, markers, crayons, glue, wipes for cleaning up.
not to mention the MANDATORY fund raising gigs like selling cookbooks, discount coupons, and differant candy bars and cookies and such. this is for a public school mind you.
their budget was slashed so bad, they had to eliminate physical education all together, and if it was not for the parents, the art classes would be gone also.
yet.....Jeb Bush can ponie up 5 million dollars to buy some land in the richest county in florida to GIVE to a pharmicutical company to relocate here, not to mention another 10 million in tax incentives over the next 5 years at the drop of a hat........but cant find a single dime to build even one more school, or pay teachers enough that the quality ones dont immediatly jump ship for a private school or leave for a better paying state.
and his brother can ponie up 200 BILLION dollars to give to haliburton and a country that truly hates our guts and wants us gone, spend a few billion on a missle defense system our own military says they do not need........and cant help fund a SINGLE SCHOOL for a SINGLE STATE for OUR CHILDREN.
college tuition is skyrocketing......paychecks are not.
our entire education system is in dire straights.....but lets vote for the WAR PRESIDENT.
ANY MORON can destroy stuff. it is time for another tea party.

well at least your teachers to not go on strike every year because they do not want to coach the sports teams before and after skewl. or that they are not paid enuf with 2 months vacation every year. Sorry but my run in with Teachers in Ontario over the last few years seems to be nothing but selfishness and greed. Come on these childern are our future!!! I know that the Education board HAS cut a lot out of our education but depriving our shildern of a place to learn is nto the answer.

I didn't say they couldn't help people, i'm saying your comment was stupid, there are some great teachers who are really good people, there are some bad teachers who aren't nice people and so on. To say that people from a certain proffesion are better than people from other proffessions is utter stupidity

would that make them better or worse people? no, your claim was pathetic, i did even think about any teachers I know when replying to it, i simply took into account the fact that the chances of you meeting every teacher in the world and every other person there is and comparing the two are pretty slim

you clearly don't know the meaning of the word "embarrasment", if i was embarrassed the you'd be right, just because you think i should be ambarrassed because it was a stupid thing to do or that you would be embarrassed if it were you with the avatar, does not mean i am, if i was embarrassed then i would not have pu tup the avatar in the first place, much less kept it up, and if i had i wouldn't need you to tell me

ROFL most teachers DONT get paid during those 2 months of "vacation". Most of the ones I know here in Massachusetts are working their butts off in Home Depot or some other job, trying to pay the bills until school starts again. I know some schools offer to lower the paychecks throughout the year to allow teachers to have something during the summer months, but most schools here dont offer that.
Maybe its diffrent in Canada. Hmm, maybe I should tell my mom she can go be greedy there.
Teaching has never been a glorified high-paying job. Anyone who gets into it for the money, with a few exceptions who move into administration, will find themselves dissatisfied in short order.
Though I tend to agree that we could could pay our teachers more, I would rather see that they got a more comprehensive benefits package that sees to their needs more than their wants as cash does.

It's BS that teachers have to pony up their own money for supplies anyway. Why isn't there money allocated to buy transparencies and printer cartridges? Sound's like schools need to be run more like businesses. A business standardizes on a printer and keeps cartridges in a central location. When they run out they buy more. No place that I've ever worked at would expect employees to go buy printer cartridges out of pocket.
I remember when I was in high school someone decided every classroom needed a laserdisc player. Thats back when those suckers cost $500 a piece. Only thing was, there where no laserdiscs purchased and many classrooms didn't even have T.V.s. So for an entire year every classroom had an unopened box containing a laserdisc player sitting in the corner. You can buy allot of chalk and paper with $500.
It's time to weed the beauracracy out of the school system. The districts need to be held accountable to the taxpayers and parents need to stay involved.
