I have watched many of hte Kurasawa films, and also some of the other Japanese period films, since I am a movie buff. I have also watched such movies as Gunhead and Returners.

Today I went out on a limb and bought a sci-fi'sh Japanese film called Versus, by Ryuhei Kitamura. I enjoyed this film. It was a mix of sci-fi, campy comedy, good marshall arts, and a half way decent story, with a nice switch at the end. I would recomend this film to anyone who would be able to rent it, and maybe even buy it.

I also bought a set of movies called Zero Woman, Zero Woman Returns, and Zero Womans Final Mission. I didn't pay too much for all three, and am hopeing I enjoy them almost as much as I enjoyed Versus.

I was hopeing to find some recomendations of other decent Japanese flicks in the action/sci-fi action genre's. Thank you ahead of time.

Looks interesting, alas netflix does not have it, but I will keep in mind if I am willing to throw away a few bucks and see it at a store. Thank you.

Actually, you might want to check out the original Godzilla movie. I do believe that it was recently rereleased to the US.

When it comes to japanese action movies, are you interested in old samurai movies? or are you more interested in modern, karate, and guns action?

Also, are you looking for live action or anime?

I am looking for the more modern sci-fi/action/ganster type of Japanese movies.

I have seen all the Godzilla movies, most all the Gammera movies, and other various Japanese monster movies. I enjoy and have seen many of the Japanse period pieces, like Kurasawa used to make. I don't have much interest in things like Tampopo, not so much into drama and character studies at the moment. (Have been in the past and maybe again in the future.) I have a ever growing number of anime titles, which are mostly the fantasy titles and some of the movies by Miyazaki <sp>.

Any good anime, modern war, action, sci-fi, and gangster would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know if this would be available on netflix, but you might want to look up the DVD for the japanese tv show Kikaida. It's finally come out on DVD. Yea!

For anime, I mean, you can always just do the classics, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, etc, etc. Also, I was actually pretty impressed with Cowboy Bebop.

Audition (Odishon) - It's not sci-fi action; it's more of a drama/thriller. It starts off pretty slow and the tension gradually grows as the story develops until the brutal end.

Ichi the Killer - Bloody/gory yakuza flick.

Fulltime Killer - A couple hitmen compete for reputation as hired assassins.

Brother - Japanese Yakuza film set in LA

You might also like the Babycart series (aka Lone Wolf and Cub) which are some good hack-em-up samurai films.

Another series called Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman might interest you as well. Miramax released a film based on this series not too long ago too.

Those have all become more or less popular mainstream Japanese imports, so you may have seen them already.

Go see the "The 47 Ronin" part 1 and 2, it's a black and white film with subtitles, but still very good. :)

The following anime may just be what you my friend are looking for. Samurai 7 is losely based on Kurosawa's masterpiece. A 26 episode series that is currently airing in Japan.

You can find it in English in the form of fansubs. Since it has not been licensed outside of Japan, it is available for download through bit torrent.

Thank you all for the suggestions so far, seems some good ideas out there.

I saw hero almost a year ago, a friend imported it in on dvd. I might be one of 5 people that felt it was overly long, overly dramtic, and pretentious. I couldn't help but make fun of it all the way through and not the good type of making fun of a film.
