Thousands.

The easiest way is to use Microsoft Word and "Save as HTML."

Many different programs. What are your expectations from this program (i.e. what do you want your web page to do)?

Using Microsoft Word to make a page is by far the most attrocious thing you could do. If you want user-friendlyness, and the feel of Microsoft breathing down your neck, go invest in Microsoft FrontPage.

I'd have to agree with AngstyCoder on this one though, notepad is my program of choice for HTML purposes. I've also heard that DreamWeaver is a good one, but I've yet to try it out.

A really great program that I found helpful was Homesite made by Macromedia. They have a free trial to check out.

Yeah, cuz there's a whole lot of difference in Word and FrontPage. I never said it was a good idea, just easy.

If you really want to build a website, use MS .NET.

I prefer notepad myself...so much quicker than opening up drwamweaver which is memory intensive. Frontpage and wysiwyg editors add "crap code" in your work >:(

I rather like Dreamweaver.

If you're not very code savvy it's the way to go, IMO.

Notepad has even less function than vi or vim.. c'mon now!

Heh, I'm an EMACS guy anyway.

It's not about lack of functionality. It's about functionality without having to take your hands off the keys, or rely on a GUI complete with mouse, or maybe just because you can use the same editor to fix critical conf files on a broken system via a serial cable as you'd use to edit your web pages (how's that for funcitonality!?).

Heh. I joke about it, but I actually find myself ******** when writing docs in Word and not being able to use keyboard control keys to move around. Heck. Even basic *nix shell editing commands would rock, but are missing from higher end editors in favor of making everyone use a mouse (cause it's so much faster to move my hand from the keyboard to the mouse, then just hit a few keys...).

Edit: Because I mangled the word "because" even more then I usually do...

Netscape Composer is a good basic free html editor. You can't use notepad unless you actually know html, and I assume you don't or you wouldn't be asking this question. Don't use word. It fills your page with crappy code. Macromedia is great, but costs way too much if you ask me. If you are just looking to make a basic web page, I recommend downloading netscape.
