What's the feeling down there with Frances bearing down? And the folks in S. Carolina are still pretty waterlogged. There's going to be a LOT of rain from this system all over the SE US.

It's raining right now on us in SC. I've been trying to mow every day this week with only very limited success. Little clusters of rainclouds seem to follow me home daily.

If that storm decides to come this way, I'm quitting my job and buying a chainsaw. There's $$$ to be made in the wake of a good natural disaster. Plus, if threatening people with the chainsaw doesn't work I can always cut limbs off houses and such.

Just be kind to those in need. There's too many stories of people taking advantage of the misfortunate. There's PLENTY of money to be made charging legitimate rates!

btw - long range computer models indicate another tropical system hitting Florida the following week...

Not likely, but it's out there.

Latest imagery appears that Frances is moving more northward - good news for those in S. Florida, bad news for those in Jacksonville to Savannah.

Heya all,

I live near Lake Okeechobee here in South Florida and I had first hand experience with Hurrican Francis. We're calling it the 'Storm of the Century' down here cause the storm decided to hang off our coast for a good 4-5 hours before making landfall.

What's it like to experience this hurricane? It was annoyingly long. The eye passed over my house around 12:30am and then we were in the eye for 5 long hours until 5:30am..then the hurricane force winds hit again. Not much damage, but annoying since we still have no power here.

It's a massive area that's been out of power so granted all the FFXI players here are frustrated since instead of the wonderful world of chocobos, exping, and other stuff...we get to watch or listen to boring hours of endless debate of when the power is coming on in houses w/o air conditioning...

Yeah, I guess Ivan doesn't hit...but it looks like it might. I for one will be catching up on homework and other stuff...Well, catch you all later.

Hello. =) I'm from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The hurricane didn't do much damage nor flooding where I live. So that's good. ^^ I was scared because this was the first hurricane I ever experienced. >.< I've only been living here for a year. I never even been through a tornado. Well the electricity just flickered during it, but we never lost power. Well we did but it only lasted like 2 minutes lol. I guess we got lucky. O.O I think the most damage was in Palm Beach. Well, that's what they kept mentioning on the news alot. I did lose my cable during it. >:( Didn't get it back for like 2 days. Oh and my boyfriend is sick now because he went out in the rain during the hurricane lol. Boys.. *Sigh* =P I don't think Hurricane Ivan is going to hit us. I hope not. >.<

Well that's about it. Sorry to anyone if they're homes got wrecked. =(

Well, Ivan looks like it'll impact Florida, eevn if it doesn't make a direct hit - stay tuned and get your emergency supplies NOW - always have them on hand - don't wait.

Jamaica and Cuba look like they're in for a rough time - Category 5, max sustained winds of 160 MPH! Ya been to Jamaica, mon? Not many places there will hiold up to those kind'a winds.

Well if it does end up hitting us, I'm going up North. However, the news keeps saying that it may not hit us. So I don't know. >.< Just have to wait it out and see, I guess.

Loganeo just scared me with his last comment. I hate these stupid Hurricanes. =(

that was not meant to scare anyone... its far enough away now that no one need to panic... local weather stations say that even if we dont get a direct hit we will get something (and i dont think ply-wood is going to help with this one)
#19 Sep 09 2004 at 12:38 PM Rating: Good
Loganeo doesn't mean to scare anyone, I don't think. Except, perhaps, to scare you into action! With things as unpredictable as hurricanes, people tend to take a "wait and see" attitude - then get all freaked out when it becomes clear that they need to move and the highways are jammed and there's little gas and all the flights are full...

Ah yeah that's true. D'oh. Stupid hurricanes. >:(

I live in Winter Springs, and am not looking forward to a third Hurricane. I've all ready went through 8 so far since 1995 and I'm not pleased with 2 in a months time.
But nothing can be done. Oh well, at least we're alive, breathing and can help others.

It's been moving farther west, but now seems to be turning northward (1 am EDT) - east coast of Florida may be spared.

yeah. Just got power back a day ago so I've been playing FFXI to make up for all the lost days.

If Ivan hits, the best place would be east or west of Tallahassee since not many ppl live there. But it'll be a lot worse than Francis or Charley was.

Anyways, what was it like to listen to the winds...literally the 1mile strip I live on got the worst winds in the entire nation. The only place harder hit was the coast. Despite being annoyingly long...the winds sound like a low flying jet. Not the roar of the engine, but kind of like that echo-effect sound after it passes by. That's basically what a 90-100mph wind sounds like. If the winds get faster, it starts to whistle and produce a howling sound.

Really though the one thing that was very unique was that the winds come and go. During the entire storm, even in the eye wall (the strongest winds surrounding the eye), there was no consistent wind gust. Basically it would be calm for a minute or so and then a gust of about 50-60 mph would last for a few seconds. The closer the eye came, the shorter the interval of calm winds, and the stronger the gusts. But despite the video you see of sustained winds continously gusting, for the most part hurricane Francis had calm winds. The damage done was solely by those few 5-10 second wind gusts that were over 70mph.

Where I live the gusts reached about 90 at the VERY most. Most were only 60-70mph. The coast was much harder hit and from what I heard they had gusts from 100-125mph. Granted these last only a second or 2, but those gusts are what does the damage.

Well, hope I informed some of you as to what it was like. See you!

Looks like it's trying to shoot the Yucatan gap now - then on to Apalachicola, Panama City, Pensacola, or ... Mobile.

Anyone posting from Alabama??
Folks on the east coast of Florida breathing a sigh of relief, those near Tampa really getting optimistic.
