Rant on the Work Force...Follow

#1 Jul 09 2004 at 10:11 AM Rating: Decent
Okay... bear with me... I am filled with angst atm and I need to vent it out... in unintentionally came out thanks to another post... so well I rant here!

I got turned down for another job...

I graduated in May with a BA in Psychology, graduating with honors...

Entered the unemployment game with a lot of hope for the future...

I am becoming frustrated and annoyed...

and If I hear "You dont have enough experience" one more time from a HR persontype... I am going to go postal! (without being a postal employee)

How in the world are you supposed to GET experience in the field you just wasted 4 years of your life studying if no one will hire you?

I have experience through my internship... but that is obviously not enough. I am planning on continuing my education but I need to be able to PAY for the outrageous costs...

I've gone to seminars to write resumes, prepare for interviews and all that... but I am not given the chance!

Whatever happened to molding people into exactly what you want >.<

Sad because I wanted to join this field so I could help people, I know I wont make a lot of money... but now it looks like I am not going to be making any.

Bah...

anyways... end of rant. And yes I know they will take qualified people over underqualified... but they neglect to tell you how to better improve your qualifications... hell the last one didnt even check my recommendations and former employers!

I suggest a career in HR. There aren't really any qualifications and you get to act snotty.
#3 Jul 09 2004 at 11:04 AM Rating: Decent
Well I have experience at telling people to f off in many different ways... guess that would help ^^

actually, a friend who used to work for the FBI among other careers said that people in HR are those that cant make it anywhere else, that when there isnt a place for you anymore they shove you in HR...

Makes me feel better... but then again I am still not getting paid...

You've got a useless throwaway degree. Of course you can't find work. Are you that slow? The only people who get BAs in Psycology are people who are going on to higher degrees or who have absolutely no intrest in finding a job. You may as well have a degree in Elizabethan Poetry.

That's why you're getting turned down, not lack of experience. If you had a degree in Mathmatics I think you'd be seeing a diffrent job market experience.

Go back to school.

Bingo.

WTF did you think was going to happen? Honestly, what job did you think a BA in Psychology qualified you for?

I honestly can't imagine. High school guidance counselor maybe?

Nice to know you dont read everything. I am planning on going onwards. And I am qualified to do quite a bit, the problem is they wont give me the chance to prove it. Hell even a person with a GED can get a job working as an ABA therapist. In fact I HAVE worked as an ABA therapist.

And you cant work as a school counsler with a BA, at least not in CT, but I can work in group homes, job placements, research, hospitals, schools etc.

I am not planning on sitting on my **** for the next 4 months while I wait for my Graduate Program to begin.

What about the Police? They need counselors for the stresses of their jobs, (sometimes) Or, Forensic Psychology, that may be tough due to the influx of people in that field who started because of shows like C.S.I.

It's all about who you know. Experience and/or education does count, but in the end if someone at the place you are trying to get a job has a freind/family member who is fairly qualified (meaning they can fill out the application with a pen and get most of it right) then guess who will probably get hired?

Had me laughing... because that is the reason I got 'downsized' from my other job... the directors sister-in-law needed a job... so I saw my job go right out the window ;-; course I could never prove this in a court of law...

Bah. Anyway, I was just having a really bad day >.<

My friend who is helping me out told his boss that they have to move fast if they want to place me in another position in the company even though they denied me one position because he is forwarding my resume and stuph onto his other boss.

It may pay less, but it is a job >.< and the almighty 'experience'

I will never understand the machinations of the Human Resource Department...

You're planning on going onward, went through four years of school and don't have a job waiting??

Where did you graduate, Devry?

Wow Smash, I didn't have the energy to point that out.

In all sincerity, I understand the hardships of paying for an education.

I think you were probably just looking to vent, but, the best advice I can give you is to contact your friends, and friends of the family and find a company that's hiring if a job is your immediate concern.

For education, although you could easily continue your education with loans, I'd recommend against that route. Something I found out about too late to be of use to me was co-op programs that some companies offer where you can go to school for a semester/quarter, then go work full-time for a semester/quarter.

The company provided insurance the entire time, though you were only paid for the time you were working. I'm not sure if this route is available for your field.

A lot of companies will pay for a master's degree while you are working full-time, if you're up to it.

If all else fails, there's always the military. They're generally not too picky.

Call the head of the Psych department at your school, explain the situation to him/her and ask if they can help?

I am pulling as many strings as I can atm.

Big problem is I cant relocate because my grad school is right here... so it would be beside the point.

Got my former Advisor snuffling around, my hubby's best friend snuffling around and Ithink he is my best bet.

So no time to trawl the boards and whine moan and complain... gotta get all these resumes and phonecalls done with before I play =)
