College coaches never succeed in the NBA because they're far too accustomed to having their players listen to them. If Coach K and Shavlik Randolph (or however you spell it) have a dispute, who's gonna have to give?
A former college coach won the title this year. Larry's been around in the NBA awhile, but he's had great success at both levels. The other thing to take into consideration is what kind of team is the coach going to? Patino went to a team that has been in a tailspin pretty much since Len Bias died. While they did later have success with some of the parts he put together, that was a terrible team when he got there. Same for Lon Krueger. What are you going to do with the Atlanta Hawks? Or the Bulls in the case of Tim Floyd?
There's few opportunities that come along to coach in the NBA for a team that has a chance at winning. The Lakers still do. I'm sure K thought about it pretty hard before turning it down.
