Coach K with the LakersFollow

#1 Jul 02 2004 at 5:36 PM Rating: Decent
I want a reply damnit!!!

I would find it hard to belive if Coach K actually ended up leaving Duke to coach our disfunctional team out here in LA. Don't get me wrong I want him to coach here as I have great respect for the man despite the fact that I cannot stand Duke. He right up there with the greatest College hoops coaches of all time tih Dean Smith and the Wiz of Westwood (my Alma Mater). I don't think he comes but I can dream can't I.

I think Coach K is more of a teaching coach. He's better at molding young minds than at appeasing superstars.

College coaches never succeed in the NBA because they're far too accustomed to having their players listen to them. If Coach K and Shavlik Randolph (or however you spell it) have a dispute, who's gonna have to give? Replace Randolph with Kobe and then what? Well, assuming they resign Kobe (which may or may not happen), one of them is a lot safer than the other and it ain't Coach K.

He's smart enough to know that this would be the case. The other thing is that Duke can out-recruit anyone. In the NBA, it's a bit less unbalanced. After all, being in LA is a great selling point.

But no, I don't think he'd head to the NBA. Why tarnish your legacy? Stick with what works.

Edit: Justin Leone is the future.

Not gonna happen. I think K was just testing the waters to see what he is worth on the NBA market, but had no intention of signing. I don't like it that he'd even do that, however, I'm certain just professionally he's always wondered.

That's a hell of a lot of money they're offering him. They must regard him quite highly.

Larry Brown. Dumbass.

I wouldn't leave Duke, he's got a dream job. He is at the time in his life where a little more wealth for his kids and grandkids might be on his mind.

I'd say it's 90/10 he stays at Duke.

Well, okay, Larry Brown. But what about Rick Pitino, Lon Kruger, and John Calipari? What about Tim Floyd? There's a high rate of failure there.

There is. College is a lot more about recruiting and teaching. The NBA is a lot more about managing egos and adjusting your system to the talent you have.

I wouldnt leave either if I was him, What to go have to put up with whiney Kobe, who has so far gotten rid of one good coach already and is working on getting rid of the best player in the league.

Geez I got to this thread after ten posts and most of my arguments are already taken.

First off, a guarantee of the highest salary among NBA coaches is huge. I would like to see anyone turn that offer down.

Second, the college game is changing. More players are entering the draft early so he would still have the chance to shape young players.

Third, The Lakers job is the Everest of basketball coaching jobs. When you choose a path in life you want to be the best at it. Why would Coach K turn down the oppurtunity to win at the highest level
while coaching for the most publicized team?

Well what about Chuck Daly? He won 2 championships with the Pistons

And anyone that says they wouldnt take the job if they were in Coach K's shoes (this means you Fish) is a ******* lier.

Wasn't much of a college coach.

Larry Brown won an NCAA title.

He never specified whether the coach had success in college or not. If you look at the numbers, the successful college coaches tend to fail in the NBA in comparison to the successful NBA coaches that started in college.

Another one, I believe, is Popovich. Coache college and then coached the Spurs.

Well, one would assume that a college coach would have to be successful to warrant consideration for an NBA position.

I wouldnt take the Lakers job if I was Coach K even for 40mil i mean he is prolly making 2-3 mil a year already at the Everest of college basketball programs. Sides I am a SUNS fan the Lakers can go stick it up their butts anyday now 40million a year guarenteed to coach the Suns now that I would take and wear a big *** Cheshire Cat smile. We just got Steve Nash and already had a good power forward, small forward shooting guard, now if only we could get SHAQ =)

Edit--at some point money is just money isnt it, not like he is gonna get more respect or power or anything in LA, hell they just brushed aside Phil Jackson after all and its not like he is an unsuccessful coach.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/college/news/2003/05/30/bkb_coaching_salaries/

Doesnt list Coach K but you gotta figure he is in the upper part of their graph, and sure the numbers are a year old but you get the picture.

K'd be crazy to try and fill the shoes of Phil. Three championships in five years? There's no way he could pull that off-- and don't think he wouldn't be measured against that kind of success. Better to wait for a couple of caoches to go in there, lose, and then talk with Buss about taking over the Lakers. Because let's face it, if Kobe is part GM, then the only thing K'd be doing is looking pretty on the sidelines and deciding when to call timeouts to give the team a breather, because he for sure wouldn't be telling the Rapist what plays to run or if he should be passing the ball more.

You are so full of ****. Plain and simple. Would you take a pay raise of 10x and a much higher position? Or would you rather keep your remedial job?

Lol no your full of **** plain and simple if I was making my salary now in a job I was absolutely sure to get respect at would I take a job for 20x more my salary. Really how much is enough? If I am worth 40 million do I really need to be worth 80 million and risk discrediting myself. Does 80 million really change my standard of living that much? Does uprooting my family make it worth it? Does having to deal with supersize egos make it worth it? You are acting like Coach K is worth 40k not 40 million put in perspective then get back to me.

Edit--cause I have a another thought, if your a sports fan then you ought to realize that asking a Phoenix Suns fan to go to the Lakers is like asking a Michigan fan to go to Ohio State, or for my neck of the woods an ASU fan to go to UofA.

Edited, Sat Jul 3 06:22:57 2004 by flishtaco

Edit--cause you maybe asking if I at my 32k a year job would take the Lakers job for a guarenteed 5 years at 40 million, and your damn right I would, I love my team and all but at 8 million dollars a year I would gladly wear a Lakers jersey and let Kobe tell me what to do.

You can never have too much. You will never reach a point where you will turn down an oppurtunity for more money. Stop kidding yourself.

Yeah Coach K is rich, but he could use a vacation house in the Bahamas. Maybe a new boat. I bet his wife would enjoy some more jewelry.

The concept of having more money is appealing to everyone. Hell, the highest paid athletes negotiate for more.

Im not saying that Coach K should go, but I cant stand to hear people make arguments saying that money isnt a factor. K gets coaching offers every year and he turns them down swiftly. Why is this decision taking so long? Because it is a prestigeous job offering a high salary.

Yes. You're making a common mistake of people not born into wealth. Coach K doesn't have to change his lifestyle if gets more money. It's for the future security of his family and their families. It's not about spending it.
