Could you be any less specefic?

Maybe you can clue me in on the particular nuerosis that causes people to want to reinact things that happened five hundred years ago. I'm serious. I don't understand it.

What's your motivation?

I personaly love learning about the past, an the easiest way for me to learn is to do, wheather I'm learning to fence, brew, metal work, or build a catapult. Plus I enjoy the people who teach me they are like family to me.

Other wise I have freedom of choice to do as I see fit. That includes renacting events to the best of my modern ablitey. Ya see its just a game I enjoy learning this way. If it was made miserable no one would do it. Plus I like it when you answer your own post, 3 in a row nice touch.

Lol Thats cool, I thought you were angry with me again... glad ur not. Its just that I didn't get much schooling when I was young, I've been working full time since I was 13 so anyone that will teach me something new, like brewing, sewing, cooking, fencing, archery, metal work, leather work so on an so on, is all right with me. so yes we may not be the most accurate group but we try to have a lot of fun.

Ok, here's some medieval trivia - off the top of my head:

When the mirror was introduced in Holland, they used to cover the mirror up when it wasn't being used, so as to retain its refelective properties.. LOL fools

umm.... Friday the 13th..
actually here:

"On October 13, 1307, a day so infamous that Friday the 13th would become a synonym for ill fortune, officers of King Philip IV of France carried out mass arrests in a well-coordinated dawn raid that left several thousand Templars — knights, sergeants, priests, and serving brethren — in chains, charged with heresy, blasphemy, various obscenities, and homosexual practices. None of these charges was ever proven, even in France — and the Order was found innocent elsewhere — but in the seven years following the arrests, hundreds of Templars suffered excruciating tortures intended to force 'confessions,' and more than a hundred died under torture or were executed by burning at the stake."

Paraskevidekatriaphobics I guess are reincarnated templars?

um I just wanted to know what every1's favorite part or time in history is...I am into anything from Ancient history up to the Vietnam war! I think its all really cool! I was gunna go see some civil war reinactments this summer but my parents changed their minds... "( Those are probably the most fun to do though out of anything to do with history...My friends and I own a bunch of airsoft guns and I allways make some last stand against my bro and his friend while my partner holds off from some other place. The whole neighborhood is covered with 6mm green BBs lol. We do reinactments with them and stuff its really fun IM sure alot of WWII and other war reinactments are done the smae way...My bro has a Luger Airsoft gun and that thing ill leave marks if u get it. I would mainly like to talk about the French Foreign Legion inthe 1900s or somewhere around there...Any1 who knows anything about it just say something... :D :D also um how would some1 get a job doing war reanactments? Is it just something like paintball or something? I live in south Texas and the museum where I live sucks! I dont need to know about boring old columbus! I detest american history(only stuff like the American Revolution the rest I like) The whole museum is mainly about stuff like the spanish killing the aztecs and stuff which I know more about from playing Age of Empires 2 The Conquerors than the museum could possibly hope to show...Its nice for a field trip kinda thing but I would rather a place like in austin or something and I would Like to see f I can join in on some of those Reinactment things...sounds fun any1 know anywhere in south texas where they are doing them? ALso besides talking about the foreign Legion um If you could go anywhere in time, to nay battle or anything, what, where ,when would it be? I would be at D-day Omaha beach on June 6, 1944 or at the Collyceum(forgive my spelling im tired and its late)to watch the games at the ROman Empire(i think thats right :D) any1 else?

War should be reinacted with realistic looking casualties or not at all. Pretending it's some glorious noble task fit for the bravest men is a pile of crap. War is chaos covered in blood and that's it.

That being said, if I could go back in time to some other part of history it'd probably be about when FDR came into office. Not that I want to reinact it, but I think it would have been intresting to see firsthand.

Learning history from a book bored the hell out of me. However, when I spent a week in Boston and learned what I did while vacationing there - HOLY ****!!! doesn't come close to what I felt.

If you ever have the chance, go visit the sites of some places with history. It will change your life more than you can imagine. The United States alone has more history to learn than you'll ever be able to take in. European history goes back, way way way back before U.S. history.

However, as Smasharoo said - war is never pretty. After hearing some of the things about the American Revolution from narrators, reading about atrocities and finding things out elsewhere I can say war has indirectly changed how I feel about it. Sometimes necessary (ie, American Revolution) but should never be glorified.

As for my favorite part in history - I know just barely enough to get myself in trouble with nearly any part of history which is about half as much as I should know to not look like a complete idiot when talking to a history professor.

My favorite period is the Bronze Age....because the Celts had iron ^^

Here's a question"

How far back do you think we go?..... Did it all start duriring and after the Ice Age, or do you think there is some forgotten history somwhere back way way back?

That's a pretty interesting question. While it's intirely possible that we advanced a bit prior to the last ice age, then regressed, and then re-discovered things afterwards, there's no real evidence to suggest that's what actually happened. At the very least, what evidence we have of the oldest settled (agrarian) communities are all post ice-age, and in fact are within the last 5-8 thousand years. This places the time significantly past the end of the ice age so that it's irrelevant in any case. If someone did develop more advanced cultures prior to that time, nothing remained anyway, so it had no impact on our development afterwards.

One of the counter theories that I always laugh at is the "common source" theory. The idea being that since there are so many examples of commonality in early cultures, and they didn't have any contact with eachother at the time, that they must have all descended from some earlier "common" culture. Personally, I think it's a garbage theory that puts presumption before evidence.

The most common rationales supporting it are the facts that so many cultures built pyrimids and large standing stone monoliths. Additionally, there's the fact that most of these structures are all oriented via some astronomical method. The problem with the theory is that they forget that the "common" thing all those cultures shared was a burgeoning agriculture capability. After all, that's what differentiates a nomadic culture from a settled one. You can't build large lasting structures without an excess of labor that's not required just to keep everyone fed. This pretty much always requires some level of agriculture. One ability that all early culture that build anything would *have* to have would be the abilty to measure time, specifically seasons. There's simply no way to plant harvests without having this ability. Thus, it's not unusual at all that every single one would have some working knowlege of the movement of the sun and stars in the sky. They didn't have calendars folks. They had to measure time by the movement of objects in the sky. Orienting upon such celestial bodies would be somewhat obvious, since that's what allowed them the wealth to build the structures in the first place.

As to the "mysteries" of pyrimid building? I don't find it mysterious at all. And ancient culture has basicaly two building materials: Wood and stone. Anything made of wood would have collapsed, and we'd have no standing instances of them. Anything made out of stone that was *not* a pyrimid would either require fairly advanced building techniques, or would have collapsed by now as well, or would have been torn down and re-used for something else (small quarried stones are pretty convenient for that). Pyrimids are what is left simply because they are the only large structure you can build out of stone blocks large enough not to be carted off easily, that they could build, and would still be standing today.

I really feel it's a matter of reverse thinking. They see pyrimids and large standing stones, but don't really think about the fact that that may just be all that's left. I could have a culture that built lots of structure and monuments, including megaliths and pyrimids, but after 5-6 thousand years, all that will be left are the megaliths and pyrimids. This gives the false impression that that was *all* we built and that somehow the shapes were important for more then just their lastng durability.
