Are we talking the Manga classic here or some obscure b movie?

if your talking the Otomo Katsuhiro Anime then yes i have a copy. It not the best but it is the most well know of the Genre and a work of art in it's own right.

I think Akira is pretty much standard issue for any Anime/Manga fan. That and Princess Mononoke and/or Ninja Scroll. Otherwise they're just posers. LOL

I've only seen a little of the comics, and here are a few words about them:

they are violent, they are violent, they are violent, they are violent, they are violent, they are violent, they are violent, they are violent,

I think you understand now

I just watched it for the first time the other day. I'd just formatted my hard drive and was starting my Windows Updates when I turned it on, and would you believe that even with a cable connection, the movie was done first.

I've got to say I really liked it, and that it's made me think about picking up the comic, if I just had room for it.

The very first anime movie I'd ever seen.

Still IMO one of the best.

Not a large anime fan here by any means, but Akira was pretty cool.

Akira was cool but my favourite anime movies are still the 2 Evangelion movies and Spirited Away (LOVE that movie!).

Yea, some classic that are must own for Anime fans are:

Akira
Ghost in a Shell
Ninja Scroll (Avatar, hehe)
Princess Mononoke
Sprited Away (great film)

Though I thought "Spirited Away" was visually stunning, I found it kinda childish (I suppose thats one reason why the Disney corporation was responsible for it's US release)
The origional Vampire hunter D is another "must have".

Most anime leaves me pretty cold. In most I've seen, either the scripts don't translate well to english or they're simply badly written. Hellooo writers, the story has to make sense and flow. The audience also has to care about the characters. The other thing I've seen too much of is shoddy animation work. I love animation, but many of these movies look like they were cranked out too fast, with too few frames and too little actual animation.

My favorite exception is Princess Mononoke. That is a beautifully done film. Visually lush, with an engaging story and interesting characters. The story reminds me of something I'd read in a book of legends or myths.

I'm still trying to figure out if "concour" is spelled with a "u", or if you were just making fun of Tarv.

If so, then your sense of humour is very subtle.

i also like the violent parts of the movie, like when the 2 gangs are fighting at the beggining, someone falls off his motorcycle and tetsuo drives up and wacks him in the head with a club, you can see the guys helmet fly off, or did it carry something with it...

eeehhh...can't say that I like Akira tha much. The animation was awesome, but I felt that the storyline was lacking. I think I would have to say tha Vampire Hunter D and Hellsing are at the top of my list. Gotta love those vampires! They are so interesting...

Now that we're talking about a great amine movie, lets talk about a horrible movie has anyone seen...

HELLBOY!!!

The plot sucked, characters, action (the final action scene was only 30 seconds long) and characters.

Hmmm... I've never been that impressed with Akira. I understand it was somewhat genre setting, so you can kinda forgive the formulaicness of it, but it's just so basic in terms of plot, that I can't stand to watch it.

Anime in general is something you either really love, or really don't. I have many frieds who are really into Anime. They'll tell me: "Oh! You've got to watch this movie, or that movie...". Inevitably, I'll watch it and come away thinking: "Ok. It's a cartoon with the plotline of a Swartzenegger film... But everyone's got super powers and they end up destroying a whole city".

Just once I'd like to see an Amime where the weak, picked upon boy didn't end up developing some supreme powers and wreaking havok upon his bullies and the countryside. Or where the girl was secretly (you guessed it!) a superpowerful hero of some sort only pretending to be an average schoolgirl. Or heck. Just one where the bad guys had some kind of motive and plan that didn't involve destroying everything in site for no apparent reason.

I just can't stomach watching what are usually really really really crappy plots just becuase they have what to me is really really crappy animation. Despite what you've heard at the fan meetings, Anime is not a "better" style of animation. It's just *a* style. And not a really good one at that. Repeating action frames over and over is *not* a good stylistic method. It's just a way to fill up a film without having to draw as much. In the same vein, removing the backround or "blurring" the backround is not done just to focus on a particular character or event. It's done because it allows you to draw less per frame.

Can you tell I'm not a fan of Anime? ;)
