What films can anyone think of that combine both classic elements of fantasy (swords & sorcery) and sci-fi (technology)?
I think this is something the Final Fantasy games do extremely well and I want to know what movies you have seen that also do it well.
I want to know because I have this friend (...yeah, you've heard that one before) who is teaching a college course on film this Fall that focuses on the Fantasy genre and he wants to cover a work that delivers this tasty combination.

If you were taking a Fantasy film class what movies would you want to see?
Thanks for your help!

LoTR really doesn't have much of what I'd call sci fi.

This question is tougher than it sounds at first. There are lots of sci-fi movies and lots of fantasy movies, but the list of movies that are both is much shorter.

  • A really bad one is He-Man.
  • Krull (love that movie) but again, more straight up fantasy.
  • Star Wars, come to think of it. They've got the magical powers of the force in a sci fi setting.
  • Tron
  • Forbidden Planet

  • And now I'm drawing a blank. I know most of these are old movies, but truthfully I can't think of any recent ones.

    Hmmm.

Didn't they make a Final Fantasy movie that combined elements of magic and elements of sci-fi?

I could've sworn I'd seen that one drunk before.

The Dark Crystal.. more fantasy than Sci-Fi, but it did involve an equinox and star system models. :)

Krull was a very good nomination!! Love that movie. :)

Too bad my husband doesn't frequent this site, since he could probably name all the movies ever made that are a mix of these things. (He's a movie fanatic. :P)

I was going to argue against Tron, but then thought better of it.

    And what's wrong with He-Man?! :P

Too bad you didn't ask this about books. The number of books out there that involve Fantasy with Science Fiction are staggering.

Thanks for your help, these are great suggestions and I will definitely pass them on. I love Krull, too. That was the only one I could come up with at first.

The list he has now still needs to be cut down (or some titles can be replaced with others). Here it is for your comments:

    Jason and the Argonauts
    Clash of the Titans
    Legend
    Dragonslayer
    Ladyhawke
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
    Princess Mononoke
    The Princess Bride
    The Dark Crystal
    Star Wars: A New Hope
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
    Big Trouble in Little China
    Time Bandits
    Jurassic Park
    Poltergeist
    Unbreakable
    Firefly
    Monty Python's Holy Grail

Some of the other professors were teasing him for wanting to give this course saying he will get 300 papers on LOTR. His answer was that was fine with him. He is as big a fan as the rest of us.

Here's my take on these films.

    Key
    * = Mythology (or told in the style of a myth.) What's the science fiction aspect?
** = Fantasy. What's the science fiction aspect?
*** = Sci fi. What's the fantasy aspect?
    **** = I haven't seen this in so long I don't remember (or haven't ever seen).
! = This would probably qualify, based on your stated criteria.

    * = Jason and the Argonauts
    * = Clash of the Titans
    ** = Legend
    * = Dragonslayer
    ** = Ladyhawke
** = Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
** = The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
    * = Princess Mononoke
    ** = The Princess Bride
    ** = The Dark Crystal
    ! = Star Wars: A New Hope
*** = Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
**** = Big Trouble in Little China
    ! = Time Bandits
    ! = Jurassic Park
    ! = Poltergeist
    **** = Unbreakable
    **** = Firefly
    ! = Monty Python's Holy Grail

How about The Haunting? Similar to Poltergeist in that they're trying to get scientific evidence of what appear to be supernatural events. The 1963 version is far superior to the recent remake.

I'm realizing I didn't explain myself as well as I should have.
The class is storytelling and visual media. With this simple description the instructor is able to add the specifics as he desires. His specifics are 1) it's a class about movies, and 2)I dig Fantasy so the class is focused on this genre.
So, it's a straight up Fantasy film course and the question he had for me (us) was what movies should he include. Well, coming up with a fun list was easy, but when looking at what could he teach he wanted to find pictures that maybe not everyone in the class would have seen. Naturally, no one could even dream of doing this without LOTR, nor could you skip out on Star Wars, because, hey, it's Star Wars. But, still try to give the kids more than what they already have. As he was looking at the different titles he wanted to pick out unique aspects of each one. The aspect of mixing fantasy and sci-fi was one he wanted to do, but couldn't think of many films that did it. So I wanted to pull from the collective intelligence of this board for an idea on this one aspect. And now, since that was so much fun, I want to open it up completely. Not all of these films can be viewed in the class, but all of them can be discussed and the students will be encouraged to view them on their own time.

Thanks again for all of your help.

(The Haunting. Very good. I forgot about that one.)

Ooh, oooh! Indiana Jones!! NO ONE SAID INDIANA JONES?! COME ON!

Crapy special effects in it. But yes it had the fanstasy with the whole magic dimension thing and the sci-fi with the gun that blasted you into a monkey.

Almost all movies fall into this. You dont see many movies about real life, or what really happens.

If you want the mother of all fantasy movies, this is it!

It may be the stupidest movie out there, but it fills the genra very well, and I would reccommend anyone to rent it and see it at least once. Its hilarious how far and ridiculous this movie can delve into the realm of fantasy:

Mio in the Land of Faraway... or land of Faraway for short.

    ^o^ enjoy!
