OMG, today, my brother and I traded cars. He's driving my 2001 Corolla S Automatic and I'm driving his 1990 Honda Civic Stick.

It's been a while since I drove stick, so I was like, "Hmm...something different for a change." I started driving and I was having fun. I was like, "Wow!!! I missed this!"

...then...it happened...

...bumper to bumper traffic to work on the express way.

By the time I finally got off, I wanted to somehow cast Firaga X (yes, X) onto the vicinity and watch them all die!!! lol

My left leg is now skinnier than my right, and I am CRANKY! >.< I totally forgot that the express way is ALWAYS packed in the morning cause of the I-75 ramp being worked on (for as long as I could remember.)

GAH!!!! BLAST IT!

(This IS a OOT forum. :-P Might as well tell a story! ^_^)

How long did it take you guys to learn stick?

I'm looking for a new used car, $5000 range, and preferrably stick because I've gone through about 12 automatic transmission rebuilds on previous cars.

Had to teach one of my ex Girlfriends how to drive stick, but she always had a hard time of it. She just kept grabbing the wrong rod, didn't bother me though.

Took me about a day. Once you can make the car go, shifting between gears is easy. Its the making it go...on a hill...in traffic for the first time that sucks. I recommend a deserted parking lot.

The crappiest part about stick is if you mess up, your car will shut off. >.< Happened to me once in traffic...as if I was going very far. lol

Here's the big secret to learning to drive stick. Ready?

Use the clutch to regulate your speed in first gear.

Bam!

That's it. That's the only hard part. Keep the gas peadal about halfway down, and use the clutch to make you go. You'll never stall that way.

You might kill pedestrians, but you'll never stall.

Nah, using your clutch to regulate speed in gears OTHER than first is what leads to burning one out. All you do when you go from stopped to first is use the clutch to regulate the speed. How long do you drive around in first gear?

Shifting through the other gears is child's play.

Okay, new question:

How long did it take you guys to learn to adjust the radio, eat a sandwich, flip off other drivers, and drive stick at the same time?

If I can't do all that, there's no point.

Just stear with your knees, shift with your right hand, flip off with your left and adjust the radio in between gears.

Its really very simple. Oh, and if you are really good you can be holding one of the following items in your right hand WHILE shifting:

Cell phone
Big Mac
Misc. Starbucks beverage

My hubby took me onto a side street, and said "DRIVE". That's how I learned stick. Took about an hour. I hated him for a month, but hey, I know how to drive a stick now. The car kind, not the below the belt kind. Below the belt kind get ridden not driven.

Hrm, never driven an automatic and I've been driving since I was 13. *Shrugs*

All my cars (only 2) are stick shift. 1985 Toyota Trueno GTS Apex. (not to include a scanvanged 1985 Toyota Corolla Twin Cam GT) and a 1996 Subaru Impreza LS.

I don't really drive the Subaru much. Only for rally's and autocrosses. The AE86 is for drift competitions and whatnot. I don't enter too many though. I prefer to slide on my own dime.

Can't think of what it would be like to drive an automatic. So bland and boring. I'd go to sleep out of boredom. ^^;;

Yea, that dang anime that keeps giving me a bad rap.

Everyone keeps saying I'm trying to be the preverbial "pooser" for lack of a better word.

Until I show them the title to the showing I owned it before Initial D was even released in Japan. ^^

EDIT:

Which was the reason I was able to get it so much cheaper than they go for now. ^^

My dad bought me a 280Z as my first car, and it was a stick shift. We went to pick it up and he told me to drive it home.

Smiley: yikes

I learned that day.

Only took me a couple of weeks to be able to drive it while smoking, changing radio stations, eating a Quarter Pounder and flipping off other drivers.
