If one bases the job's popularity based on the number of posts on these forums, of the original pre-ToAU jobs, BRD has the fewest number of threads and post.
The most popular job seems to be RDM, with THF, MNK, and WAR also being pretty popular.
Of course, this could also mean that BRDs are popular, but they are too busy being invited to merit parties to have time to post messages online.

Maybe BRD is just a fairly easy job to understand, and there isn't a lot of need to ask questions because of it?

Bard is actually one of the least-played jobs, but the number of forum posts has nothing to do with it. The fact that the job doesn't require much (not bias, my main is Bard), there is little to be said. Many jobs (melee) require very good gear to stay competitive. With Bard, you can still be useful with crap gear.
