First, i've been away for a long time and im getting back in to FFXI. woo

BRD was my fav and still is but now that i am reaching level 70ish
im wondering what setup would be good for Elegy in a XP/Merit party.

Here's my Set-up now.

CHR: 67+41 -- to -- 67+31
Singing: +5 -- -- +10
Wind: +13 -- -- +10

Opo-opo ( should I switch to demon @ 73? )
Wind Torque
Minstrel's coat ( errant haup. @ 72? )
Moon ring x2
Melody earring x2
Earth Staff
Choral cannions
Choral Cuffs
Cobra Pigaches ( working on better )

- What is a good elegy set-up
--and for me, should i change to less CHR and more Singing ?

Im not good at what to choose so im hoping on some decent advise with a why i should or should not change set-ups

first and foremost, many will argue this but...

you are probably going to land elegy 95% of the time on anything but earth-resistant mobs or high level NMs.

that being said, your gear looks good.

AF2 hat > demon helm > opo-opo
errant > minstrel coat
skill/macc rings > chr rings
dance shoes are cheap until you can get something better
earth/terra staff ALWAYS! (light/apollo for sleep)
+2 instrument ALWAYS! (unless sleep, then mary's horn for +1)

basically get as much skill/macc as possible without draining too much chr. ie, 10chr on body is greater than 3skill but 6skill on rings is greater than 10 chr.

This. Mobs that resist elegy are always going to be a pain in the ass regardless of gear. Everything else will rarely resist it, to the point when I don't even remember the last time my Elegy was resisted by a "normal" nonresistant mob.

General rule of thumb that I use when dealing with CHR vs. skill is that skill is 2x better than CHR, so when deciding between sets such as Minstrel's vs. Errant, you can see that 3 skill x2 is 6 CHR, so if Errant Hoolahoopa has more than 6 CHR(protip: it does) I'll wear it instead. However when it comes to rings, Nereid are always better because there is no ring that gives +6 CHR.

Is this really true or is it an exaggeration? I once had a brd in meripo that would always get resisted.

She was gimp in gear and skill though since she couldn't keep songs up and pulling was slow.

i used to have a brd mule with capped singing+wind merits, and i could cast elegy in pretty much full haste gear and a little skill/chr where i didn't have any haste, and i never got resisted on merit mobs. now on my brd with no merits, i get resisted maybe 10% of the time, with full chr/skill gear (which admittedly is a bit gimp).

+36 skill is srsly broken. category limits on the other hand really suck Smiley: frown

in my current gear i average less tha 1% resist on lullaby and elegy and all merit camps, and about the same for most endgame stuff(sky being the main exception as gods are a pain to land elegy on.) IMO magic acc > skill > chr.
i usually try to have about half my base chr from gear so around +35ish and than pile on as much skill as i can get from there.

Yes it is true. Did you happen to notice which mobs were resisting? BST Mamools are the only mobs that give me trouble because they ARE resistant. BSTs get Resist Slow, which Elegy counts as. I consider my gear pretty top-notch and I still have about a 65% success rate on those bastards. Every other mob is very susceptable.

It was on birds. But yeah...maybe extremely under lv instruments?

Just to clarify, you are talking about Elegy and not Elegy/Lullaby right? Because I still get resisted on birds a small amount with lullaby (moreso when I try to use Nursemaid's Harp), but not elegy.
Anyways, the only thing I can think of is that BRD may be newly 75 and hasn't had time to cap skills yet, or is attempting to use a string instead of a wind instrument.

Now that you mention it..it could have been lullaby. Heh, sorry! I'm not too sure anymore.

as far as the mamool BST goes they have resist slow and BST job remember ANY brd spell is CHR based and defended by charisma so your chr vs theirs. they are bst ( native high chr) plus native slow resist. and higher lvl (look into accuracy handicap for lvls) and yeh they suck but on the bright side. can work to you advantage. when i soloed merrow 5 on bst for volunteer's nails she tried charming me with songs and abilities and failed every single time.
