BRD/BLM ??Follow

Well, i just came from the summoner board, and frankly, i didn't like the stuff that they were saying, like how weak it was. I was wondering, since i am a blm, if a bard would be a good pair with a blm? i am raising my whm sub right now and i found out that i hate to be a whm, i like to nuke and let other ppl worry about themselves. once i hit 15 im switching back to blm/whm until 30, then should i go for bard? is bard/blackmage a good idea?

I would say it's not that good of an idea based on a couple things:

1) First and foremost, if you like to nuke (i.e., be a direct damage dealer) and not worry about what other people are doing--you definitely should NOT consider being a bard: That is the complete opposite of what bards do. Bards don't do any meaningful direct damage and spend nearly all their time making sure mages/melee have 2 songs going at all times.

So, a bard is constantly running around and buffing all the players in his/her PT and needs to be acutely aware of what everyone is doing and where.

2) BLM sub with BRD has low MP (even taru's) and the nukes you have available (coupled with subpar INT) are pretty weak vs mobs you will be fighting at your main's level. I actually tried this combo early on and found it utterly useless (I gave up at 16/8 brd/blm). However, since I'm only 28BRD--I can't say "for sure" that this sub would be horrible at higher lev's (since I don't have first-hand exp to answer your question in that regard).

If you want to try that combo out, I'd wait to do it until you reach higer lev's as a BRD before using that sub.

That being said, if you try to bring a nuker's mindset to your BRD job--you will most likely find PT members not being happy with you at all. If you want to nuke and not worry about what people in your PT are doing--stay a BLM. BRD will not be fun for you at all with that paradigm.

Of course, I'm not your "run-of-the-mill" BRD build either--so do what you think will be fun :)

As Bard/BLM you will have no natural magic skills, so you will use all magic spells at your Black Mage level. Later on this will not be enough to land spells on enemies. At level 70 a 250 skill has a hard time hitting; a Bard/BLM will have about 80.

Bards usually subclass something that is useful without needing any skill or needing only a little skill. Usually White Mage.

yea, summoner's no good unless you've got level 70 in another job, then you can quest for the better avatars and become uber.

Until then, you're stuck with the beginning jobs. Black mage doesn't make a good sub to.. um.. ANYTHING except summoner, white mage, and red mage. And to some extent, dark knights.
