Well, we held out for a long time. Ours was one of the only job forums that wasn't completely abandoned. The BST fraternity held strong. I guess I am not the only one who was utterly demoralized by SE's failure to consider BST when they introduced adoulin and the ilevel system. 23 days it has been since someone last posted here.

Anyone want to share a bst memory?

One of my favourite memories is of going out into the desert as a BLU/BST to get my 1000 needles spell. I was near the level you can first acquire it, so it took a bit of doing, but I managed it without incident.

I also helped a friend get a good number of spells as a bst, just letting mobs beat on my pet.

I always loved having a friend out in the wilds, even if that friend was just a jug pet. I loved riding the hate line back when I was soloing levels laboriously (before grounds of valour) - I loved duoing on tigers on the glacier with a friend. I miss those days.

I'm confused by what you're saying about them failing to consider BST when they introduced Adoulin and the Item Level system, since they specifically boosted pets when it came to the Item Level system. They pretty much got the same deal that a Dragoon's wyvern had, and the increase to their damage output and their defensive capabilities were noticeable.

Um, sorry, I missed where dragoon's pets are one time uses that cost plasm? Also they didn't get around to boosting BST till months after the content was released - and last I checked no one invites BST to do anything in Adoulin (unlike DRG, which I see shouts for all the time).

So clearly, hard to see how that is equal. But yeah, if you don't consider messing with enemity so that BST can't pet tank anymore, the fact that they didn't get around to boosting BST until well after content released, the fact that most of our pets can't even get to max level (as far as I know only the crappy plasm crab can) that our pets are weak as all **** still and the fact that no one invites BST to anything except maybe Saccing, sure, I guess you're right.

One of my favorites was duoing from 10-60 in just a few days with a friend. Ok, I was NIN/BST but he was BST/WHM. I already had BST at 75.
When we got to the Jungles were were chaining almost non-stop and anything EM to VT was a target. Zero downtime at all and we leveled so fast. Natural pets of course since this was back when nobody used jugs.

I always have good memories of duo leveling/meriting against "Cows" in Bibiki Bay at 75. If you were with a good BST you could easily get chain #4 and some rare #5 without killing Gobs. Then they had to go and ruin it by making them IT+. You could duo with a DRG here too but it's a little tougher since they pull a lot of hate. SMN is ok too.

Unfortunately my worst BST moment has always been being killed by Ancient Goobbue (this was at 75 cap) numerous times. It's usually due to mischarms or me being too slow with macros. People keep saying he's easy, but I've just had bad luck. Stupid easy in a duo of course.

I always loved leveling solo in areas that most people never even saw from 1-75. I especially loved the zones with lots of aggro and having to sneak pull or fighting in between aggroing/linking bats.

Well, what I was meaning is that, like Dragoon's Wyvern, a Beastmaster's jug pet level is based on the item level of the weapon, and from what I had done with Beastmaster since, it was a significant boost to the pet's offensive and defensive capabilities. I know it doesn't change that enmity is a bit wonky, but as far as damage output and letting your pet tank, they're all a good deal stronger than what they were before.

Having your pet's stats based on the iLvl of your main-hand axe was a big boost, however, that boost hasn't brought BST pets to where they were before. For one thing, using that new iLvl axe takes away the -11% pet pdt that you gained with Astolfo. In SoA content, pets still get eaten far more quickly than the did in old content. A reive mob in Marjami will tear through a pet quicker than your Reward timers can keep up with. There are plans (in the Fall update) to boost attack, defense, evasion, accuracy, etc of jug pets across the board. When that happens, BST will be capable of things it was capable of before. Until then, pets are fairly weak. Granted, the master's damage has been drastically increased, but that doesn't help much when you have to constantly turn away because Snarl timers are still down and your pet can't reclaim hate.

Look at how eager these 2004 BSTs are to test pet mechanics! :D It's the Conclusive Jug Testing thread of yesteryear.

There was chatter of log parsing back in '04? Wild.

Looking forward to testing the Fall update pet boosts. :) BST fo' lyfe.

that's a walk down memory lane, I see posts from Lilyanne and Lindeus. I know they both retired, but they both had a huge influence on successive generations of beastmasters.

That is good news. Thanks for acknowledging I am not nuts, I certainly felt nerfed - even with this boost I will still be nerfed since I will need to get an endgame weapon to get to approximately the same strength I was on "modern" content before adoulin. Boogers.

Hey! Any BST awake in here? <sorry for the Necro bump>

I have to agree with CorncobWilly about the loss of -11% Pet:PDT - that adjustment to pet defense better be significant or we're hosed. Silver lining: I've always used Beast Bazubands in my Pet:PDT build (macroing in AF3+2 hands for Sic/Ready, of course) but never noticed much of a difference - I was beginning to think I wasted precious inventory getting them, now with this def+ adjustment they might be more relevant along with items like Lion Tamer, Pallas's Shield, and Askar Dirs. Just throwing those out there for the sake of relevancy, not really considering adjusting my build to accommodate these items, though I'd love to see some testing.

Among my favorite BST memories... I was a lowbie trying to cross back from near the Konschtat Highlands zone in Valkurm where I was soloing Lizards for experience to the Outpost and realized I didn't have sneak or invisible. In the tunnel I caught agro from those damned Sand Bats, and was within 2-3 hits of dropping dead when another linked. Then the light came on. <Charm> -- charmed the first, set it to attack the second and hauled ****.

Another fond memory along the same line of thought was crossing a zone in Shadowreign Era, didn't want to bother with sneak/invis so I merely <Charm> <Leave> <Charm> <Leave> etc across the zone. So handy and economical!

Most fun I'd ever had on BST would hands down be level sync Djinn 'sploding in East Ronfaure[S] with my BST mentor and good friend. Relay race to grab a Ladybug, whoops! Mischarm - "I'll get it!", <Charmed>, throw another at the Djinn, go get another or if Thieves were farming Ladybugs grab a Colibri instead. Ahhh! Still highly recommended to help friends level 45-50 and get a good laugh when someone wanders too close to the Djinn when it would Nocturnally Combust for 2-3k damage!

A pity so many new BST these days miss out on all the fun things from burning exp in lolAbyssea. "Hey, I'm 99 now, what do these job abilities do?" Such complete fail.

You know I have not played FFXI since the cap was still 75 but I would still lurk here from time to time to see how my favorite job was doing.

Hate to pull the "Back in the days" but remembering how active this forum use to be makes me nostalgic and kind of sad. Use to be a whole page of replies and posts would cross over to page 2. Now it looks like we can still see posts from late 2012 on page one.

One of my favorite memories?

1. Trying so hard to charm an undead dog at lvl 9ish. I could not understand why it would not charm.... It was a dog!

2. trio'ing the ohat mob when my alliance died. Really felt nice to handle what took a whole alliance to take on back then.

3. making this place my home for the 5+ years I played.

I still lurk even though I haven't played seriously in years, and no longer play at all. I just can't let XI go for some reason... I think when I'm done with university and have a job I'll probably re-activate just because... well, just because. 10 yeas of my life is hard to let go!

My main memory of BST is always going to be the same, and it's not even that special. It was just a good day of me, by myself, my good buddy Mr. Familiared Slime, and us going to town in Bostaunieux Oubliette at a nice leisurely pace. I had a coke, my feet up on the desk, and I was just waiting for the moment I would ding and be able to get Rampage at long last. Scrubs was on the TV next to me... Season 1, episode 22. It was just a perfect, chilled-out night.

What happened to my beautiful job Smiley: eek... I haven't played since 2011 and enjoying 14 now. Can't say I have even followed much on the happenings of XI or BST for that matter.

As for favorite BST memories, BST SUXXX and the way our job could throw it in the faces of the nay-sayers.

well it just hasn't kept pace.

Basically, the game is now focused on increasing your level through gear - but BST is not keeping up because the pets that can "level" with us are super duper expensive and or non existent (went to go buy a stack of the better, semi-affordable *250K a stack* pet and there wasn't even any. Other option is 60K each... sigh)

And even the pets that can get higher leveled seem to hit like a wet paper bag and need meds aplenty to hold anything of note.

Meanwhile jobs like SMN and PUP just need to get 1 item that levels their pets forever (and all of their pets not just 1 or 2) - it's broken unfortunately. The job is just falling way behind.

This is not true. SMN avatars are lvl 113 if you have the best gear available. With 5/5 Beast Affinity merits, augmented relic +2 gloves, and an appropriate axe, BST pets currently go all the way up to lvl 128 (Herald Henry). Our best pet is 15 levels higher than theirs. I don't see how we're "falling behind."

I play PUP as well, and even with Alternator, an automaton is far more squishy than a BST pet. A 128 Henry (who has Def Boost and Stoneskin TP moves) can really take a beating. Way more than what a SMN avatar or a PUP automaton can handle.

Well, Henry has a theoretical max of iLvl 128, but in practice you can only currently have him at iLvl 119 assuming Kerehcatl/Guttler/Aymur/Farsha mainhand. Still, you're right that he takes hits pretty well when Def+ is up. Just sucks spending plasm on him, haha.

And SMN avatars would be iLvl 115 with the absolute best gear (upgraded Nirvana... s'pose that's not terribly common.)

Because the avatar and the jug pet take the same damage from melee hits, and the avatar is completely immune to magical damage. Since everything in Ulbuka only uses one element, simply use the element avatar strong to it and watch as a 6000 damage move from Hurkan does 20 damage to Titan. And survivability doesn't even matter for SMN, since you can instantly, for free, resummon the pet when it dies, and it will instantly return to the fight without you even having to tell it to.

And that the 113 avatar hits for the same damage with the same attack speed and the same accuracy as a 119 jug pet, but then can drop a 7000 damage blood pact every 45 seconds. (9000+ if blood boon goes off) Meanwhile no one even uses offensive sics anymore because they do the same as a normal melee swing. Or in the case of Scissorleg, they for some reason do half what his normal attacks do.

Not to mention we only have 3 families of pet of the required 7. There are no amorph zones to use the crabs in, and there's no Yorcia delve to use Xerin in. We can use a lapinion to make Killer instinct useful in morimar, but, we're completely screwed everywhere else. SMN's effectiveness doesn't drop off by 30% by switching zones.
CorncobWilly wrote:

I play PUP as well, and you are either dishonestly comparing the soulsoother frame to the PLD crab, or you have no idea how attachments work. A Valoredge puppet with alternator cannot be killed by anything but a Naakual/delve boss. And it'll even hold them for several minutes barring max hp down/doom moves landing on it.

The currently strongest enemies in the game, level 128ish rams in Kamhir, cannot kill him. Put on your pet damage taken-12% claws (which pup can still use because their pets are tied to a ranged weapon) your anwig salade and sheperds neck, 2 armor plates and a mana jammer 2 and your puppet takes 30% of the damage the enemy deals. Then it can parry attacks into 0 damage, counters attacks for 0 damage, shield blocks about half of attacks for half again as much damage, and can heal itself to full with cannibal blade every time it gets TP. Not to mention between flash and shield bash it shouldn't even get hit much in the first place, and the innate regen from both Auto-repair kits cancels out any damage he will take anyway. And that's not even getting onto complicated sh*t, like evasion parts, stoneskin, reducing the damage of attacks every successive time they land, or the abilities the master can use.

On the BST side of things, those rams kill my crab in 20 swings and there ain't sh*t I can do about it. I'm better off tanking them myself and just blinking the damage away, which I have no choice but to do because the pets are still hitting for 120 damage while my axes do 300+ damage, 2-8 times in the same time frame. After that I gotta spend 60k gil or 2000 plasm to even call another one, Assuming there are any to buy and assuming I can get any plasm to buy another one, since BST isn't allowed into delve. How is this not "falling behind?" A level 119 wyvern is as good as our current pets.

Henry's natural cap is 113 (as long as your main-hand axe is ilvl 113 or higher). You get an additional 10 levels from 5/5 Beast Affinity merits, and 5 more from the augment on relic gloves. 113 + 10 + 5 = 128.

There's a super simple test you can perform to prove to yourself that Henry's level is capped based on the iLvl of your main hand weapon. :)

It's the MaxHP testing done in Abyssea: You've got Beast Affinity/augmented Monster Gloves +2. Equip Brethren Axe or Faizzeer +1 in your main hand and drop Herald Henry's HP down below 50% and use Healing Salve I. It'll restore 2757 HP, guaranteed (and his iLvl 113 MaxHP is 5514).

The maximum pet level is still restricted to your main hand weapon's iLvl. If you have Brethren Axe/Faizzeer +1 equipped, Henry is iLvl 113 regardless of Beast Affinity/Monster Gloves. So the current maximum is 119 from using Kerehcatl/Guttler/Aymur/Farsha.

Well that really sucks. I thought the merits and gloves allowed pets to surpass the cap from your weapon. So that means that there is absolutely no advantage to using Herald Henry over Sunburst Malfik if you have an ilvl 119 axe then, right?

HeraldHenry has a tiny advantage over SunburstMalfik (at level 119 it's 5560ish MaxHP vs 5240ish MaxHP, possibly other increased stats), but basically you'll have the same practical experience when you use either. ; ;

BST SUXX!

I still remember how that started. Some guy posted on this forum 'BST SUXX IF U DON'T AGREE PLZ RATE DOWN BITZ'. Everyone started rating everyone else up, and the thread became such a karma mine that we had DRKs and WARs in here going 'BST SUXX'.

Oh, man. BST SUXX and bitz became massive inside jokes in my LS. I miss those days.

I loved old-school BST, almost all of my jobs were levelled solo with a BST sub from 2005 on. I still remember everyone flipping out over the December 2005 update when they made mobs depop...it was mayhem around here.

Wow you brought back memories.... and Hi again Sioux :)

The Bst forum was very much a home for many back then. I remember around that same time one main member starting a rebellion when Allakazam changed to Zam. Tore down all his stickies, trolled anyone who posted here. True drama!

Not to be one of those "Back in my day" replies, but in my farewell post here I mentioned how the bst forums almost read like a novel, and it really is true.

Bst was a frustrating job back then. Misunderstood by most of the FFXI community. Not a Party invite type of job. Hard as heck to solo/duo/trio when jug pets didn't do much damage. It was one of those 3 steps forward, 1 step back kind of jobs. The Square Peg in the round hole of FF11.

I think it was that frustration that banded us all together, and we all chose to band together here.

Still BST got access to some of the best equipment all around and maybe the best merit weaponskill in the lot in the form of Ruinator! Still enjoy doing stuff on BST wearing my Armada Hauberk and slashing stuff to death along my pet ;p
