Hey!

I'm about to start lvl bst and I'm taking it to 99. I just got a question regarding charm since I want to lvl it solo to 99 (want to learn how to play the job really well).
Some of the condition of charmed pets is:

No experience point penalty is incurred unless the charmed pet is a higher level than the Beastmaster.

Arn't you suppose to charm higher lvl mobs and then use them to kill mobs that are VT to IT?

When you level, do you mostly use charmed pets or do you use jugs aswell?

Leveling has changed. You can do it old style, but that doesn't necessarily mean you use higher level pets than you.
You can spend 2 or 3 pets for each mob you kill if you want to take down VT or IT mobs. Its probably going to be slow to do that solo though.

I suggest going after EM~VT and not too many VT most the time. if you chain kill that way you get alot of xp solo. The exception would be bombs, snoll or Djinn type mobs. send a pet to hold them until they explode, while you keep your safe distance. Djinn are best for this, because you can encourage them to explode w/ elemental magic.

However, you can also make plenty by killing ep and dc mobs now, or doing training pages from the field's of valor or grounds of valor pages.

if you want to do it old style, then most the old camps are still good, and you will have no trouble w/ competition.

Well wouldn't you recommend leveling old style? I played before but I never got in touch with BST so I don't really have any experience with it like the other jobs. It would be nice though to get to 99 fast. Not really sure how I should exp. Did my first GoV the other night and went from 10 - 37 in one day. Never imagined it would be that effective xD

Its all a matter of preference and play style. Sometimes its fun to slowly level solo. I did my drg from 21 to 39 solo in about 4 hours and it ws fun and relaxing. I think solo vs T+ mobs will give you a much stronger grasp of the job, and you pay more attention when you risk DEATH so much.

Sometimes, though I want to get the job leveled up and equipped as quickly as possible because I want that job for a specific purpose.

or sometimes you get stuck in a hole. you level to a certain point and you don't feel like playing that pacew/ the job. or yo ustop and do quests or maybe not.

Frankly, I highly recommend doing Djinn in Vunkerl Inlet S around level 63+.
It was most fun duo, imo, but solo works also.

Its high-risk, high-reward xp. send the crab or fish to tank the djinn, and you sit at max casting range spamming the weakest elemental magic you can. /rdm and /sch work best. when you hit them w/ elemental magic matching the day of the week, they get 100% TP and they are likely to explode. if you take hate, they will chase you and blow you up, if you walk the line just right, you cash in on xp.

for bombs I would keep a /mage for melee in other camps I would go /dnc when higher than level 30. below level 30, I loved /blu best
but most don't take the time to get /blu prepared for it.

Nah I haven't done /BLU yet, I recently got WHM37 and curently doing the chocobo quest so I got a long way ahead of me. I really want to get job up to a certain lvl pretty quickly because I want to start soloing some old school HNMs but then I need to learn how to play well. I guess I can speed up to 60ish and then go slow from there. All the other jobs I can just speed level since I've played them before.

I would recommend the opposite - going slow to level 60, then burning from there to 80s or so, then doing some skill ups, then burning to the end.

It's highly inadvisable to charm and fight with pets that are higher level than you (i.e. mobs that con Tough or higher) except for very specific situations. Tough mobs will only stay charmed for 1.5 minutes (excluding boosts from +charm gear), which will usually result in your pet uncharming and turning on you in really bad circumstances.

The only time you want to charm and use Tough (or higher) pets are when you have your old school 2 hour "Familiar" ready. BSTs used to use Familiar on a charmed IT pet to solo content that other jobs couldn't solo. Some BSTs used to use Familiar on a charmed IT mob in a regular zone just for a half hour of quick and dirty exp. I think one of the popular spots for this was Qufim, where a BST could charm and Familiar the Kraken and go to town on the other mobs, which are significantly lower level than the Kraken.

Not sure if you realize, but SE really improved the power of pet jugs available at level 76+. You can viably use them now to exp with, especially if you are fighting EP mobs doing GoV pages. There's really no reason to charm anything 76+, but you certainly can if you like.

The issue is exp per level needed to advance. I did BST old school all the way to 75 before the cap was raised (and before FoV or GoV were introduced), and it was really painful. People say they want to do it the old way, but I'm not sure you realize what kind of time commitment that is. Even if you are getting 200xp per kill on an EM mob (I only got 100, and that was IF I released my pet before the final blow) it will take forever to get to 99. I'm not saying to leech in Abyssea, because I firmly believe your first job to 99 should be earned, but don't frustrate yourself doing it "old school" either. It's not going to be as fun as you remember, trust me. At least make use of GoV book reraise regardless of what you do.
