IMO the only "best city to start" would be the city for your race so you get the free ring(bastok for humes). Othere than that it really makes no difference. Plus you can usually by the ring with CP.

The ring won't be that helpful to a RNG, as HQ Bonecraft rings are what you want to use. SdO has good CP gear for the early levels (except for the Belt which is 16k CP I believe), while Windurst has some of the better stuff for the later levels (a lot of my RNG buddies like the white Combat Caster armor. I have a Hairpin, so I can't use the Cloak...).

To be honest, I would be apt to say that Bastok is the worst starting country for a Ranger. =(

IMO it kind of depends, but I do agree that Bastok is probably the worst place to start a RNG.

Sandoria has the carpentry guild and nearby places to harvest lumber. Raising that early on could allow you to be building your own arrows instead of purchasing them.

Windhurst is nice because the silk thread that crawlers drop early on can really help to beef up the bank account. In addition both wooden and bone arrows are sold by NPC's in windhurst, which means you don't have to pay high AH prices for low level ammo.

There's one or two things to keep in mind about Bastok though, and they may be important enough to you to want to start there. First of all the Bastokan Ring gives +Dex, +Vit, and +HP. Marginal benefit for a RNG, but if your first character is a THF this might come in handy. The second thing is if you plan to use guns a lot at high level, the alchemy and goldsmithing guilds are there, both of which are skills needed to make bullets.

One more point for SDO: when SDO is winning the conquest, you can buy wooden, iron, and silver arrows at the weapons shop. Of course, other nationals could visit and take advantage of this lovely commerce, but it's much more convenient to have it in-town :)

Bastok has arrows in at least 2 of its 4 zones - Wood, Iron and Silver.

I have yet to see Silver Arrows anywhere in Bastok, or much in Vana'diel... Only a few times in the weapon shop in South San d'Oria... Where in Bastok are they? I hate buying silver from the AH, cost me 34k for 1900 arrows (not even quivered!), if I bought from a shop it would've cost me about 28k. But I couldn't find them anywhere ><

_Supposedly_, Silver Arrows can be bought in towns where the town is first in Vana'diel's conquest. I have seen one of the two NPCs in "Mjoll's Goods" (Item Shop in Bastok Markets) sell Silver Arrows, along with one of the ladies in the SSdO weapon shop. They run at 18g a piece, which is a rather hefty step up from Iron Arrows.

Check the boards and apparently, like SDO, Bastok has to be first for Silver Arrows to be for sale.
As I can't remember seeing Bastok lead the conquest on Unicorn, I can't verfy this. Maybe this sunday.

EDIT: As a note, I buy arrows for 16 gil apiece in SDO; I think it has to do with fame and charisma.

Well, Bastok has been first on my server for the past 2 nights and I can say with reasonable certainty that I did not see Silver Arrows at the Bastok Market shops.

I've heard it likely that the items sold at vendors depend on factors beyond just being in first place for conquest.

I believe it's also said that if Windy is in first place we're SOL. They don't sell Silver at the vendors period.

Maybe this is due to the fact that they almost always sell Bone Arrows, which can't be found in Bastok or SdO, no matter how hard you try...

I'm pretty sure it depends on the region that is under control by the country. Just like how some npc vendors will say something like "I want to import from this region, but we don't have it under control", whoever has the area that Silver Arrows can by imported from, gets silver arrows. But what area this is, I'm not sure.

Most likely it is on the Quon (sp?) continent since Bastok and San d'Oria are where Silver Arrows are usually found.

It's just like how if your nation is in last (has least regions), your weapon shot won't have many weapons (least places to import from). I'll try to compair the regions under control when San has the arrows to when Bastok does the next time it happens, I'll post if I find out anything.

I think it makes sense, but I still could be wrong.

** Sorry for being off-topic ><
