Ranger: The most abused subjob?Follow

While hunting NM’s to pay the “dues” of being a ranger I have encountered many other players with many different job/sub job combinations. Out of all the combinations there is one that gets me a little steamed, the ????/ level 1 ranger. Now, I love being a ranger in the game and take pride in the fact that I have chosen a path that is far less traveled. One of the biggest perks of being a ranger is the wide scan ability which is shared only with beast masters. However, the fact that the ranger job quest is so easy (takes 10 min) and the wide scan can be used at level one, people can use this “class defining” ability with absolutely no effort by subbing it. I kind of feel cheated…. I mean, there are other jobs that when subbed get handicapped or loose some abilities. Am I being stingy for thinking that wide scan should only be a main job ability?

Well. they may be able to scan, but it's only maybe a block away. At least you'll be able to scan where they are from the other side of the map.

A lvl 1 rng subbed will give the square you're in, and most of the 8 adjacent ones:

* * *
* * *
* * *

Very useful for NM camping.

So widescan has a shorter range then normal when ranger is a subjob? Sad to say but that almost makes things easyer for them when camping.

You would think the wide scan would be a least a LVL 5 ability.

I can see what you're saying...and I kinda agree.

But consider that one can easily grab the BST as a sub and get widescan at level 1 just as easily.

I consider Barrage more our class defining ability more then scan....In other words, PTs are looking for Rangers hoping more that we will do the damage more then our ability to Scan.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule....

At least TH doesn't come until lvl 15, which requires SOME time/input.

Some meaning the 15 most frustrating levels of any class in the game (including WHM IMO)

Yes, I think it is abused, but at the same time, esp. for camping NM's, if they only sub lvl 1 rng, and assuming they're THF (for TH purposes) as main, they dont have any fast-acting Mob-grabbing skills (save steal, with short range). This does nerf the NM camping-ability of it, compared to a WAR (with voke) or RDM (with Dia)

Abused? Yes, but at the same time very useful (subbed RNG in Batallia as a THF solely for pulling purposes, until I had gil saved to start RNG). Nerfing it for subs though, I disagree with. I need that scan when my pt needs a good puller :D

thf/rng or rng/thf can camp better than any other combo. They get TH, strider boots + flee, scan, and pull using boomerang or loxley, which are faster than vokes and dia due to extra range.

Wide scan is very much abused. Square need to either make more options available for high lvl rng or make wide scan a higher lvl ability.

strider boost + flee would be sick if they do stack. Too bad there are almost no rangers that have the 3-4 million gil to use this great item.

Which of the two jobs is easyer to get? This is why you will almost always see the /1 ranger as the sub.

It is true, lots of people use a theif sub for treasure hunter to the get more items and flee is great too, both earned at higher levels then 1. However, nither of these two abilitys have such a huge efect on hunting as wide scan does. You tell me who has the advantages in these combos:

thf/war or rng/war
drg/thf or drg/rng
50whm/25thf or 50whm/1rng

As i see it, the scale tips to the ranger/beastmaster side making them the more important job to have then the theif when hunting.

Am i saying that only rangers and beastmasters should ever get wide scan? NO...

But I feel that a level 50 bard/1 ranger shouldn't have the same if not better advantage, due to the fact that they don't have to do a remote scan to shorten the list, as a main job ranger.... the so called "master of the wild"

RNG might have a slightly better chance of getting the mob than THF (although in highly camped areas, this is doubtful), but THF is more likely to get the drop.

Camping NMs with RNG only works if the mob spawns in a place where nobody is looking, and you can get to it before anyone else. However, if the mob spawns where nobody is looking, THF/RNG (or even THF/BST) will win every time. THF/RNG has essentially matchless camping ability at 25/1, while RNG/THF would need 50/25 to compete.

If the mob spawns near a group of campers, /WAR will probably win all pulling contests (due to npc targeting macros), so /RNG becomes irrelevant.

Just wanted to clear something up about the widescan for BST and RNG. The reason why you will mostly see RNG's subed is that BST's widescan is only one square while RNG's includes the surrounding squares. Just thought I would add that in. :)
