Ok, right now I am a 22 warrior and have plans to get the Ranger adv job when I hit 30. But theres a problem, I've read most of the other topics that say what you should sub and such. Ninjas would be nice for the +20 ranged attack, and warriors would be great for the beserk, Theifs for the treasure hunter, mage for soloing... However if I sub warrior, would I not be expected to take the hate off of the healer if it goes the them? I mean, Rangers arnt the best of tanks, or would I not be expected to provoke it off?

You can if you want, either by way of provoking or by just firing that extra shot to get enough hate on you...

Unlike THFs who can theoretically act as a clutch provoker because of Perfect Dodge, the RNG is left with no devices to save himself/herself beyond that one lucky Eagle Eye shot.

You'll find RNG defense not very much better then caster DEF after a while. You'll buy maybe 10 seconds of time for your WHM in which case they'll either try to heal you and get the MOBs attention back again or you die in which case the WHM is right back in trouble.

If your PT is already that far out of control of the situation there's not much hope :)

Aye...just for kicks I tried to peel an add a few days ago. It definitely did not go well for me...my 2 hour + WS wasn't enough to kill the mob, and after that the WHM had no hope of being able to keep me healed. The rest of the group did have time to kill the first mob, and made it to zone without anyone else dying, so I guess you could say I did my job just fine, but I won't plan on doing that again anytime soon unless I absolutely have to.

You might live if it's the sort of thing where the mob is almost dead, or the zone line is very close and you can 'voke and make a run for it...but I'll agree with Kamena and say that your value in those situations is rather limited.

you have no obligation to voke. Just swithc ammo, use meat, and berserk is same as voke. Or you can use ws or barrage.

Nin gets only +10 racc extra, gets blink, and faster tp gain.

Until around level 30, I had parties counting me as an extra provoker in the party, and in a few of them I might not have been invited if I hadn't been /WAR. Until the tanks get good defensive abilities and higher-end heavy armor, the mobs don't hit all the hard and having a ranger take some hits isn't much of a problem. You'll be expected to provoke a mob in emergencies, but you won't be expected to suicide yourself for the party like a tank would.

You gotta be kidding me right? Man, at level 7, decent challenges are already throwing me around like a rag doll (e.g. a BLM w/o bind). I've got my armor up to date and I have no problem killing them but the downtime is killing me. At this rate, I couldn't imagine suffering more than 3 hits from any IT mob. Please tell me it gets better (however, I have notion that it doesn't).

I'm leveling in Crawlers' Nest right now, and IT mobs (that are withing fighting range) will hit me for 50-100 damage a swing, when my max HP is a little above 600. My armor is all over the place, mostly RSE, with a Centurion Scale Mail on my body and Royal Footman's Bandana on my head. My defense isn't great, but I don't die in two hits or anything...
