my response: <3 windaria!
that comment though, i think it pushes the artificial "otaku vs family friendly" split a bit too hard... where does miyazaki fit in? and the comment itself is bizarre if you really think about what he's saying... mobile suit gundam ran for 43 episodes because it was "family friendly" (that series is about as family friendly as that viral video of soldiers cutting off hostages' heads)? sure, the later gundams are fluff (and way more popular), but zeta gundam was huge (and while it's definitely a bit dumber than the original, it's still set in a world of sadists and tragedy).
it's definitely true that the american view of "top anime" / "legendary anime" is very skewed, and surely there isn't as much moe as people who vomit upon thinking of moe perceive, but that divide... i mean, we got on this topic from me mentioning nadia, a family friendly anime (started from a ghibli idea) directed by hideaki anno, featuring neurotic repetition, french new wave nonsense a la evangelion, and all the freudian absurdity any true "late night otaku" could desire (plus "boy adventure novel" fun from a time before any of us read novels).
