When you install the game it associates itself with the registry of the computer you installed it on. The software is there on the external drive, but not registered with your dad's computer.

What you should try to do is to copy the files from the DVD to the hard drive at your mom's and then install it form the external drive at your dad's.

it MAY work BUT it'll actually cause it to think it's afresh install if the copy's been updated

I'm also getting this error.

Error Code = 20008014
Cannot open registry key for installation path of PlayOnline-compatible software.
ID=1000

I had it installed nice and happily on my friend's computer under Windows 98, but yesterday my friend installed Windows XP.

Hmph. I've looked for help on this, but no-one knows what to do/miss the nature of the error entirley. I'm going to try a complete re-install... sigh... Unless anyone has any better ideas?

The registry is how the operating system knows certain details about the software, such as the folder where the software is installed. The registry is changed when you install or uninstall software so a reinstall will fix your problem.

You could manually edit the new registry but if you aren't familiar with how to do that you could potentailly damage the system. I don't play anymore but you should be able to find out what the entries are by looking on another computer with ffxi installed.

The registries are under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>PlayOnlineEU>Square Enix>FinalFantasyXI, right?

Don't freak out about the EU, I'm in Australia, so I'm using the European PlayOnline. Heh, selfishly I wish for an Squenix Oceania branch, just out of conveniance.

I've done registry editing before, when Windows wouldn't let me select dial-up connection as I was setting up my new ISP. But if it gets too scary, my friend can help out. All I need is those numbers :3

Anyone want to post them here for me and other people who might need help? Like I said, I have the European version, and I have the RoZ and CoP expansions (if that helps).

Edit: Reinstalling the whole dang thing fixes the problem. This includes POL & FFXI (and all the expansion packs). I don't think registry hacking will fix it. So backup and screenshots you have and reinstall. And now for the SUPER FUN updating... X3 *gives hugs and hot chocolates to comfort dial-up users facing these updates*
