On the road to Paladin!!Follow

So im a bit new, i leveled up a few jobs so far and planning to become paladin. I wanted to know whats the best basic job to level so that when i become paladin it gives extra bonuses. So far I have War-14, RDM-14, and monk-15. I was kinda confused because lvling rdm to 30 would allow me to lv sword and shield while lvling my healing and divine, while as lvling war, i would be able to get a bit of exp at tanking. So anyone who can help?

I expect any PLD to have WAR and NIN available as subjobs. In party situations, I've occasionally been asked to go /WHM, /RDM, and /BLU for various reasons (typically maxing either magic or physical defense). MNK would not be a bad option to counter-tank as well, but again, not needed.

While you'll almost never need /DNC for a party situation, the job compliments PLD so well that I've come to almost expect it.

For soloing... DNC, RDM, WHM, and SCH are some good options, but none of them are required.

Ideal leveling path for new player:

MNK -> 18
WAR/MNK -> 30
NIN/WAR -> 50
WAR/NIN -> 50
PLD/WAR -> ~74 (switch to /NIN for Abyssea parties)
PLD/NIN -> 90

Don't worry about shills as they'll cap easy enough if you level in parties or take the time to level them later.

I've always liked /SAM for staff & great sword, but I don't know if that works as well now as it used to. I quit well before Abyssea came out, and just came back last week.

/SAM is a GREAT addition for Staff/GS for PLD AFTER you get Hasso and Seigan. It's not worth it prior to that as you lose out on hate pulling mechanics and defense mechanics. It's not generally worth it for tanking, but for a little more DD appeal, it certainly helps.

Paladin can also get a decent 6-hit build with greatsword and 7-hit build on staff without sacrificing any haste with the proper gear. It is right on the edge though, so you would have to WS in most of the gear, but a lot of it is decent for WS too, so you don't lose too much in the move.

I would say that, just starting out, your best bet is going to be:

Take MNK to level 20. Do your subjob quest and your get your chocobo license.
Take WAR to 49. Use a great axe. WAR/MNK can tank just fine with a GAxe.
Take BLM to L17. Get Warp.
Take WHM to L37. Get the 3 main teleports (Dem, Holla, Mea).

Once you have all that done, go and unlock any advanced jobs you want. Having access to a higher-level damage dealer will make a lot of everyday activities easier, and having WHM37/BLM17 makes getting around a lot faster.

As far as subs for PLD go, you'll want to have:

WAR: Pretty much mandatory early on, and it has its uses at higher levels.
DNC: As mentioned above, it's not that great for a full party, but in small groups or solo it's hard to beat.
NIN: Useful for tanking tougher stuff, but it's a bit more challenging and gear-intensive to do well at.

There are a bunch of others you can find a use for if you try hard enough. I've used RDM, WHM, BLM, SCH, BLU, RNG, THF, SAM, and BRD. None of those are something you are likely to need, but they can be handy or fun to have available.
