Hi there, returning to the game after a very long break, and doing so with my wife.

We both have BST at 51 from last time we played, and I have "most" jobs to around 30, SMN to just under 60.

What I am looking for really is a job thats wanted for normal partys, wanted end game, but can also solo/duo some exp with my wife inbetween, and was considering playing PLD.

Used to enjoy it before, and I think I have it around lv30, but when I last played it was NIN fever, and no one wanted a PLD tank (even remember having to DD while a pre blink NIN tanked in the dunes) so I put it to one side.

My question is, would PLD fit my goal for a job? and if so what would a good duo partner be? my wife did always enjoy RDM and in my mind I can see PLD/RDM being a decent duo, if maybe a little slow?

Any advice more than welcome.

Present game, no, PLD is not one of those jobs that's wanted right now. It's primary role is to tank. Unfortunately, the state of the game right now doesn't NEED a tank. Even low man settings, a MNK gets a LOT more DD and Tanking ability than we do (through raw HP, Counter, Counterstance, Perfect Counter, etc).

PLD is still a fun job, but the game just doesn't need a dedicated tank job. A job that gets a lot of play right now is WAR: it tanks well, it's one of two jobs that can make a low man group proc weaknesses in NMs (see Abyssea for more information), and it's one **** of a DD job. I break my PLD out quite a bit of the time, but most of the time, I'm getting more done on BLU.

If you're interested in a guide for PLD 1-75, I'll link my PLD guide.

Hmmm, finding it really difficult to decide what jobs to take high level.

Thinking of breaking out DRG as I used to solo a little with that back in the day.

Think my problem is I always seem to like the jobs that are always seen as lol, SMN, DRG, BST, PUP appeals, PLD.

/sigh.

Might just duo 2 RDM, slow as **** but at least jobs people will want.

Decided to hi-jack this thread, since I have been away from the game for a few months (since abyssea came our essentially).

Just wonder what you all would suggest as far as Atmas to get first, perhaps what Magian weapons are good. Also suggestion on what new gear is high a top your lists to get, besides Creed. I am going to put Creed Collar and Goading Belt at the top right now.

Suggestions?

Thanks!!!

Atma wise, HP atma like Ebon Hoof or Sanguine Scythe will make living through big attacks easier. Depending on who you play with, Refresh Atma like Full Moon or may be very helpful. May want Ambition just for the movement speed, and it comes with Refresh, too. (Ambition is the big one I'm missing.)

After that, you're looking at DD Atmas like Razed Ruins and Voracious Violet.

Gear wise... Creed of course, but what else do you want depends on what else do you have, mostly. I guess Almace is the best ToM sword to go for, but it's not exactly easy or fast. Took me over 11 hrs scattered over a week just to get NM (three times) for trial 150, which is the very first one. /sigh

To go on the same thread, I've just recently finally gotten around to leveling my PLD (Obviously not because I needed it for anything... since apparently it's not needed for anything >_> But I always wanted to level it and it's been 58 for literally years.) And I'm now looking to gear it appropriately so I can actually use it for something.

Only thing standing between me and CDC is a few more trials, which I hope to have knocked out in the next week or two. I won't have PLD geared until then anyways, so here are my goal sets, I'm looking for some feedback. Assume 2 things: A. Not spending an obscene amount of gil on anything, I'm rather poor and awful at making gil. B. I'm not sticking AF3+2 into my goal sets, because although I do want it eventually, PLD is not my priority job. C. Ochain and Aegis are out of the question for now.

Edit: Obv Dark Rings augmented with -5pdt/-5mdt (Or as close as I can get as sanity allows farming gold chests).
I'm sure I'm missing a lot of really obvious fairly easy to get pieces for these sets, I don't follow tanking gear very closely, so please make suggestions. Anything as far as getting drops from mobs is fine, crafted/AH only gear over a few hundred k you can suggest but I won't ever get haha.

While shadows are up, I'd drop the torque and herc ring. Not sure what I'd use, but probably chiv chain or something similar to that; more damage dealing gear.

For spell casting, I have three different sets actually: a haste/FC set, an enmity set, and a shield set.

Shield set is really only used for utsusemi: ichi and any other spell that has a chance to be interrupted. I could probably change this now with all the FC gear/atma.

Enmity set is for anything that I use to generate enmity: flash, provoke, etc.

I macro in my haste/FC set for almost every spell I cast, but I stay in it for utsusemi: ni.

I've completely stopped gearing for HP due to abyssea. Cure cheats are now as easy as clicking off the HP buff. I also tend to gear up in more MDB and MDT gear even when shadows are up if I'm tanking anything strong. I find too many NMs now spam a ridiculous amount of -ga spells of varying elements, this leads me to gearing for magic damage. Anything that has a single element (Drauga, Orthrus), I've got resist sets.

Don't know how but MDT/MDB set totally slipped my mind, how's this: http://www.ffxiah.com/item-sets/196390 ? (Adaman legs ANNM -2% MDT aug, swap in Jeweled collar instead of Invidia when appropriate.)

Wouldn't it be best to just macro this stuff in for spellcasts/WS assuming that is possible? Obviously on some fights where the mob may have instant cast or extremely quick WS that may be impractical/impossible.

I also made changes to Shadows Up per your advice, I also realized Creed Earring was doing nothing for me in that scenario as well, so I made some revisions: http://www.ffxiah.com/item-sets/196299 I can't really find anything better for neck than Chiv chain that isn't a few million gil, so I went with that for neck.

It's just as you say, it can vary from NM to NM. Sippoy was a *****, I think I stay in full MDT gear when I fought him. Same with Rani and Raja as I found I too focused to keep hitting MDB macro (unless you can force the gear change just by being the target of a spell?).

Anything other than those three though... I guess I can't really think of too many others that I wouldn't just macro in my gear.

Of course, this is all just a preference and I'm sure others will tell you this isn't needed.
