I've gone from being a competent Paladin to well nigh on worthless. I can not hold hate for any length of time. In an effort to try to become capable I've built a haste build but that has proven to be less effective than my old turtle build. Here is the gear I have to chose from. My questions are: What should I be using? What should I look to obtain?
weapon: Joyeuse, Macuahuitl +1, Company Sword
shield: Koenig Shield
head: Homam Zucchetto, Askar Zuccetto, Valor Coronet
body: Perle Hauberk, Valor Surcoat, Galant Surcoat +1
hands: Homam Manopolas, Askar Manopolas, Valor Gauntlets
legs: Askar Dirs, Galant Breeches +1
feet: Homam Gambieras, Valor Leggings
waist: Sentry Belt, Swift Belt, Warwolf Belt
neck: Chivalrous Chain, Parade Gorget
back: Boxer's Mantle, Lamia Mantle +1
Earrings: Brutal Earring, Knight's Earring, Diabolos's Earring, Hospitaler Earring
rings: Soil Ring, Ulthalam's Ring, Ecphoria Ring, Hercules Ring
Need to know what you're fighting.
Abyssea mobs are a joke and you shouldn't care. Gear like a DD and kill mobs fast. Or gear with a solid defense/pdt type build and pull mobs off the puller/sleeper and work as a semi-DD/caller. I'd personally go full DD and just help kill. First puller/caller works well for what PLD has. If you do go a more DD route, don't be afraid to use that MP to help cure. PLD can be a great DD/cure hybrid if you're not stingy. Best part is, if you DO pull hate, it's not like it's going to rip your face off. Most mobs die fast enough that this is rarely a problem.
If it's NMs.... Outside of Abyssea NMs, there aren't many NMs that need a PLD to tank these days. The 10 levels we've gained have made these an utter joke if you have a respectable LS to help take them down with. I'm typically half of a four man team or a third of a six man team (two accounts) and we're winning every limbus zone we try. And I'm tanking on BLU over PLD because it helps kill the mobs that much faster. Inside Abyssea, you need to know how to shadow tank a mob and what to do when you lose hate. Abuse cover. You've got Valor Surcoat - USE it.
If it's quests/missions, most of those are a joke to low man anyway. Initial hate can give a great way to boost performance as people can go out a little sooner and you'll take the first few hits.
Learn to play with macros, too. You've got some solid enmity and some solid haste gear floating around. Make the best use of it you can.
Here's some suggested sets (built off what you have and adding things you can easily pick up): Idle/TP
weapon: Joyeuse [this is still king, but I'm expecting it to fall behind on the next round of magian upgrades]
shield: Koenig Shield -> Gleaming Shield (despite the lack of stats, this sucker blocks a ton and for large amounts of damage)
head: Walahra Turban [trumps everything you've got. Yes, even Askar]
body: --> Haubergeon [Perle Hauberk is strictly worse unless you have full set.... and even then, it's only better by a tiny smidge if at all]
hands: Homam Manopolas
legs: Askar Dirs -> Perle Brayettes as soon as you can. These trump Askar in every way
feet: Homam Gambieras
waist: Swift Belt
neck: Chivalrous Chain [Parade is good if you can stay on top of macros - the extra mp helps tons, but Chiv will do more for you if you ever let your hp stay too low to proc the parade]
back: -> Amemet Mantle +1
Earrings: Brutal Earring, Diabolos's Earring [Sad to see you won't have Suppanomimi....]
rings: Ulthalam's Ring, Ecphoria Ring -> Upgrade one of these to a Woodsman ring. Preferably the Ecphoria.
Relevant stats for idle set:
Accuracy: 44+5 from Dex
Enmity: 5 in idle set
Alternatives to this are:
Accuracy: 32+7 from Dex
Crit Hit Rate: +2% (woo....)
With enlight at 85 giving an accuracy bonus, I'd prefer the full Perle set.
If Creed is an option, then the +2's are definitely worth figuring out how to get and to work into a build. Legs and feet are solid +2 pieces to work towards, and the head isn't that bad, either. 8% haste in feet and legs is stellar. It also comes with a hefty accuracy boost. Work on feet as first choice if you have to.
Other improvements would be Sniper +1/Toreadors rings, redoing DM for Suppa instead of Knight's, Haubergeon +1, and other assorted improvements (I know there's a back piece that I just can't think of). Enmity
: Best used with JA's, such as Rampart and Reprisal. Flash actually benefits from a hybrid of haste and enmity, where the enmity fits in where you don't already have haste. Rings and earrings for instance.
head: Valor Coronet
body: Valor Surcoat
hands: Homam Manopolas
legs: Galant Breeches +1
feet: Valor Leggings
waist: Warwolf Belt
neck: --> Harmonia's Torque
back: --> Resentment Cape
Earrings: --> Hades when you can get them
rings: Hercules Ring, --> Mermaid's when you can
Total Enmity: 29
Improvements: B Mask or Hero's Galea, Katipo Gorget [when we know where it's found] or Ritter Gorget, Pluto's Earring x2, Iron Ram Hauberk or Hydra Haubert, IR Hands or Hydra Moufles, Trance Belt, Iron Ram Hose, Iron Ram Greaves.
Cure Cheat Macro
This is my default "want to get hate" macro. I use it with Cure III. The idea is to put on as much +HP as you can to maximize your set, Cure Potency to get the most out of it, and Enmity to finish maximizing the rest. I'll let you sort this one out. Hospitalers and Homam are great starting points.
Shield Skill Macro
+Shield Skill goes here.
Creed head (+1 or better, preferably)
Knight's Earring since you have it
Useful for Utsu: Ichi so long as you're maximizing haste where you can.
You've got a lot of potential here. Keep at it and you'll see the results soon enough.
