so I am wanting to level Paladin and I'm fast approaching abyss, what subjob should I focus on? /war /nin /dnc?

If you are in alliance where the DD's are using proper food and proper subs [/war, /sam,] and you have proper healers that will actually allow the DD's to kill things quicker by hasting and curing them, and occasionally toss you a refresh [mostly not needed to cure you, but rather you act as main heal for the DD's,] then /WAR is all you will ever need. It's Fine to /NIN on some of the harder hitting things [I /NIN on Wivre for instance, great EXP.]
If your alliance sucks, mages are slow to cure/refresh, don't haste people, and your DD's suck, then /NIN will probably save you a few hits, while allowing you to do some damage. DD's: A 500 WS in abyssea is no good people. Please eat proper food, and ask your mages to do dia2/3. This crap is not acceptable just because you are lazy and there's 17 other people to pick up your slack.
Gear like a DD. I hardly even use ENM gear for JA's [let alone use the JA's.] A PLD is a DD that gets the mobs attention off the puller. Occasionally voke/flash a 2nd [or 3rd mob] that is slept at camp. Cure the DD's when they get hurt [or the BLM's.]

If your doing NM's /nin. Everything else you can prob sub war. /NIN will be worthless against mandys which is kinda the jumping in point for ptys. As long as your shield skill is up to snuff you can easily tank any of the other exp mobs. If your party is moving along at a decent pace flash, voke, and when you lose het to the DD's move on the the next mob and flash voke. Once the DD have hate they should be able to kill it fast enough without taxing the healers too much. With that ASA atma you should be pretty self sustaining for mp if you have a ethereal earring too.
A bit late to the thread, but /NIN works for PLD in Abyssea exp groups--I've never used /WAR in there. Make sure to have Haste for Flash's recast timer; March x2 would be even better.
Pachypodium sucks for building ruby and thus golden lights; expect to wait a long, long time to get to capped exp per kill. I don't understand why anyone wants to exp on those things; avoid those if possible at all.

I have done main /assist as PLD/NIN on many critters other than Pachypodium; /NIN just works, IMO.
As an example, in one Attohwa session fighting Ignis Eruca, Utsusemi absorbed 761 attacks (73.67% of total) where regular melee damage received averaged 129.93; that's 98,876 HP saved over 2 hr 56 min, or 561 HP per minute that no one has to cure. (Well, would be less damage if I had a shield on, but still will be in the hundreds of HP per minute even without using Berserk.)
That's a pretty big damage mitigation any way you look at it, and that's pretty how it went with everything I've been main /assist on. There's no good reason to go /WAR for exp after Lv.74, as far as I'm concerned.

Don't expect to tank for entire fights especially if you're up against pimped DD, but do your best to act as "assist" (switch to new mobs quickly as they are being pulled in) and try to grab enough hate to absorb the first few attacks from each mob. Also, if you've got refresh atmas, don't underestimate your own ability to act as a backup healer in a pinch. (If that's not needed, then by all means go with DD atmas)

Were the DDs AFK?
Were they there for every fight the parse covers?
Were they like level 70 and you 85?
Were you the only one with Atma?
Did the DDs really suck?
When a PLD/NIN out parses a MNK/WAR and SAM/WAR on XP mobs something is way out of wack.
A lot more info and complete parse data would be interesting.
Wait, wait. lol. There are many caveats:
1. It was a semi-pickup group; it was form by some members of a non-endgame LS looking to farm shoes (and exp), and they filled out the alliance with pickup members. (I was a semi-pickup member; I know someone in the group.) Beating most DDs in a group like that isn't that hard.
2. The "Total DPS" numbers only measure a character when active. With large enough of a sample, you can say it measures the DD potential. So, it removes factors like AFK for WC, people leaving earlier (than the person running parser), or join later, etc. (It does distort puller's performance since the timer begins for the puller on the pull, while the rest of us only start when we do first action--which is why I didn't include the puller.)
If I want to compare based on the actual damage output, I'd have to see when people join and leave, and limit the range. For example, if I want to compare with the DRK/SAM, it'd be fight #3 - #152, and the result would be:
I had the first to engage advantage, but as the "Total DPS" showed, our DD potential weren't really all that far apart. (Which was why I posted "Total DPS".)
3. I'm sure not everyone was Lv.85 (like I was), but don't know who was at what level. (TheMNK/WAR wasn't Lv.85, SAM/WAR was Lv.85, I think? )
4. Not everyone was buffed equally. Here's Haste type buffs for select members from the two DD parties:
See how I had Haste more consistently than others? That helped to push up the DPS quite a bit. (Advantage of being main /assist--you can ask for Haste. heheheh.)
5. Don't know what Atmas other people used either; didn't ask. But, food/item wise:
