I find that in the lower levels, a hybrid gear set is generally best. Rings, for example, get much more per slot by equipping Mighty or Vision rather than vit. Conversely, the body slot doesn't have very good DD gear available until at least Luisant, which is expensive. Might as well stack def and vit in that slot instead of the few points of dex you can get. Defense is generally more potent at low levels than vit is, but happy coincidence most gear with vit also has high defense.
You should also have both kinds of food with you. Defense for when you are getting hit hard, and attack/acc for when you aren't. What I did was go a couple of fights without food, and if the book refresh was keeping up, I used attack food. If not, I used defense food, which is really potent at low levels. It can also change as you level up, like eating fish for pugils at lvl 22, but meat for pugils at lvl 24.
As for subjobs, /war is almost always best in exp pts. It is possible to go /dnc after lvl 40, but you have to really know what you're doing. And pld is busy enough without MORE timers, tp, and finishing moves to keep track of. I have yet to try it myself, but I'm kind of excited to do so. But not until a leypoint party so I can change and come back fast if I hate it.
Oh, and for WS macros. If the equipment change is on the line above the WS, it counts. If it is below the WS, it won't. You can't go by the blinking, that is just graphics and can lag behind. The important thing is that the command to change equipment was sent to the server before the command to WS.
This can be done in the same macro, or by pushing an equipment change macro then quickly hitting the WS macro. There doesn't have to be any delay between the two.
