Elvaan PLD... bad idea?Follow

Eh I like it. PLD natively have a small mp pool (cept for taru) so aside that you'll be ok. Any race can play any job well..just have to do some things differently.

Elvaan PLD has the best potential for DD. If you like going the DD route (and at 59, at least, you really should give it a try), Elvaan is perfect.

Galka win the VIT/HP battle which, despite not being as necessary any more, is still a VERY helpful thing to have. Galka lose less enmity each time they are hit which means it's easier for them to keep hate on those occasions you can't avoid a hit or four.

Hume and Mithra run a middle of the road approach - decent VIT/STR/DEX (which is really good on Mithra) and a good size MP pool, but again, once refresh enters the scene, max mp is less vital.

Tarus win on sure mp pool size. While you have to be careful of the few things that can one-shot a taru PLD (and you shouldn't be overcamping those mobs for sure), what a Taru lacks in DD or HP potential, they make up for in raw enmity through being able to cure more often.

In the end, each race brings something to PLD. Even Hume and its true middle of the road approach allows a balanced approach to building PLD that takes advantage of the benefits of each race without giving up too much on the other fronts.

Edit: By the way, if you're too worried about your mp pool, learn to carry the ingredients for drinks and learn to craft them in the field (carrying ingredients is more inventory space effective). Getting refresh from the very beginning with the use of juices is highly beneficial until you get a RDM with refresh.

I agree with this. When I was leveling in Caedarva Mire (which you'll most likely do in the late 60's to early 70's), I had 5 MP/tic Refresh between Sanction, Auto-Refresh, and RDM Refresh. I found that to be more than enough MP to keep myself sufficiently healed. I didn't need any outside healing unless I was silenced by an imp's Deafening Tantara, or I took some nasty hits.

Honest recommendation:
1) Get MNK to 17 if it isn't already.
2) Take WAR to 37 so you don't have to come back to it later.
3) Start leveling PLD to 75
3a) Find the time to take NIN to 37 - you'll want it when you get near 75 (merits/end game tanking/messing around with friends as a PLD on smallish fights)

By doing it this way, you'll be able to make the most use of your time with PLD without having to go back to relevel WAR so your sub isn't gimped. Also, I'll link this for further consideration (yes, some day, I plan on finishing it).

Elvaan is still the best IMO (i may be a bit biased, since I am elvaan)

I think everyoen will agree end game MP pool is generally not an issue. But Galka's extreamly small mp pool can be tricky to deal with.

In certain events end game HP is critically important.

Elvaan have the second highest hp and have significantly more mp then a galka.

But your a long way from having to worry about that.


I have to agree with whoever said bring materials to make juice. Whenever i am lvling low lvl, i always carry 2-4 stacks of pinapples and 1-2 stack of water crystals. Super cheap and can make a HUGE impact low lvl and all you need is cookign 20 which u can do in about 1-2 hours.

Late to the game, but I've never regretted being an Elvaan PLD, not once.

It's enough HP to never have to worry about stacking HP gear full-time for fear of dying, and enough MP to easily manage Flash, Reprisal, and enough Curing to keep myself going.

Short easy answer

VIT doesn't matter because you'd have to wear an assload of VIT and still not take less damage over time than using a proper Shield Skill and - Physical Damage Taken setup. (This is assuming something well over your level)

Blame SE for messed up DEF/VIT formulas, the only thing I tank with a lot of DEF/VIT is Jailer Of Prudence, simply because you can reach a high enough level of DEF on him to make him hit very lightly, and he strips shadows so much that /NIN is pointless.

HP matters to a point, but most of our best gear has HP in addition to more favorable stats. Add in that most hard things are tanked /NIN, and you have even less reason to stack on HP when most attacks are being blinked away.

Short easy answer, if someone wants to get technical, be my guest, it's late.

Elvaan's are good for PLD role...






....except how they hold their shield. It annoys the hell out of me

If I were to remake my character I would go Elvaan. Mostly for PLD, but also for the sexyness.
