Level 53 PLD Elvaan (if that matters)...

Anyway, basically a "is this the right equipment" question. And do I need more VIT plus gear?

Here's my gear:

Sword: Tactician Magician's Espadon
Shield: Royal Knight Army Shield
Ranged: ---
Ammo: Morion Tathlum
Head: Iron Ram Helm
Neck: Medieval Collar/Spike Necklace (for WS)
Body: Parade Cuirass
Hands: Iron Ram Mufflers
Waist: Life Belt/Swordbelt (for WS)
Legs: Iron Ram Breeches
Feet: Gallant Leggings
Back: High Breath Mantle
Rings: Woodsman Ring x 2/ Mermaid Ring (macro in for JAs)
Earring: Buckler/Beetle +1

Heal MP gear:

Dark Staff
Qiqirn Sash

I'm kind of going for a DD PLD build with hints of "turtle" tank. If MP is an issue, I'll swap out some pieces for RSE (i.e. Legs and Feet). But, overall, this has worked for me so far.

Oh and I eat Dorado Sushi mostly, occasionally Tavnazian Tacos...

Especially in about two levels, things get a LOT nicer.

Body: Parade Cuirass --> Jaridah Peti is around the corner; or you can wait for Haubergeon at 59.

Looks like you're mostly on the right track. Levels 50-55 are a little bit different. A lot of people like moving into ToAU areas. A PLD (especially with a decent backline) can make that an easy transition, but gearing for DD while fighting birds at 53 can be a royal pain. I personally (due to my brother not having ToAU installed yet) did those levels in Gustav fighting crabs.

Conjecture tells me you're already past the point of defense/vit no returns. I wouldn't focus on Vit very much at all at this point.

Ok cool...I still feel pretty new at PLD (even after 54 levels now) so I appreciate the feedback.

Alright I just dinged 55 (close to 56) last night on Colibri (I hate those friggin' food stealing birds). The RDM (who is also a 75 PLD) highly recommended that I switch to a VIT and DEF build.

So I turn to the PLD community for help. At 55+, is it better to go for more of a Turtle Tank build versus DD PLD?

I'm just afraid that if I give up some of my Accuracy gear I won't be able to keep hate as well.

I'm 62 pld and 55+ is probably where DD pld is MOST important. Now all the DD's are getting their best abilities and WS's and for once they are starting to make me have to try to keep hate. DD pld generates more hate than turtle pld and your going to need every bit of it you can get.

The RDM leveled before the benefits of DD PLD were shouted out, then. He's not really not recommending the smart thing here. If you turtle up now, you won't be able to hold hate NEARLY as well.

The RDM did say he leveled PLD years ago so I was a bit leery of his advice. I'll stick to my current DD PLD gear for the most part but I think I will look into Turtle gear as I go along so I'll be ready for the higher levels. I suppose it doesn't hurt to have both sets of gear in the long run.

I should have realized he was an old school PLD when he looked at my Parade Cuirass and said in party chat: "Did someone pee on your armor?" I got the impression he wasn't aware of the subligar quest equipment.

While I never did it, having "turtle" pieces can't hurt you too much. If you do ever end up over camping, they can come in handy.

I used a full DD set from 55/56ish all the way to 75. I even started end game tanking with it. Got my surcoat by my third night, though. With level sync now, I get to enjoy DD PLD at any level. It makes it so much more fun. Plus, I finally get to see what it's like to have Sword merits while leveling.

/em agrees with everybody else.

For emphasis: Last night, for lulz, I brought along my enmity gear to Limbus. Macu, IR, parade, yada yada yada. I can usually hold hate on the flower the entire time it's alive if I'm wearing my dd gear (ja spam, sentinel, etc) as it dies within like 30 seconds. In the enmity setup, I didnt hit the thing but once, and our sam (yes hagun) tanked the whole thing. Put DD gear back on, and tanked Temenos Western tower rather decently.

^Cannot be over-emphasized.

My long winded 2c as usual.
