I'm under the impression that newer doesn't necessarily mean better (before the Lv55/60 WS' at least.) That said I've been using Fast Blade till now. Should I be ditching Fast Blade for something else (besides Vorpal Blade obviously)?

Really depends. Typical PLD/WAR would be either Fast Blade, or Seraph Blade depending on how good you are with macros.
Good melee gear with a good WS macro, then Fast Blade with zerk up. If your really good with macros and have spare MND / INT / MAB lying around, then Seraph is pretty good if your stuck on harder mobs.
