Tanking TiamatFollow

I've decided to start playing PLD more, and I do a lot of endgame. As far as most HNMs are concerned, I don't need to concern myself with much more gear, but at Tiamat today, one of the 2 PLDs we had was about to leave, and I said I'd change jobs, but I don't have the fire resist gear for when it's flying. Later I asked my friend how much fire resist gear I needed to tank it in the air. His list was fairly large, and with little room and not wanting to spend all my gil for 1 HNM set, I was wondering what I could do without.

He suggested the following:
Hrotti(15) - have it
Numinous shield+1(15) - not horribly expensive, I can do that
Black Ribbon(12) - Was looking at maybe green ribbon+1, but might want this
Water Belt(20) - easy to get
Blood cuisses(21) - I've had these for years
Buburimu gorget(10) - I can spend time to get this or just pay the 20k if it comes on AH
Power sandals(7) - he said it was an easy quest
tarasque mitts(5)/legionnaire's harness(5) - both cheap
ruby earring(10) - was looking at buying a triumph earring since I may use on DRK and NIN too
Communion Earring(11) - i suggested this because I can borrow it from a friend whenever i want
ruby/triumph ringx2(9/10) - don't really want to spend the gil on triumph for 1 more resist
cerberus mantle(10) - I want to avoid this unless i can use points to get it from my LS

My question is, how much fire resist do I need? it would cost me over 1 mil to get 150 resist gear, and the pricier of those items would be triumph earring(600-700k), numinious shield+1(300k) black ribbon(100k). I don't mind buying the shield because of the +5 reistance boost, but how often will the 2 from black ribbon affect me, and the 1 from a triumph earring over ruby?

I can keep the cost below 500k buy buying numinious+1,2x ruby rings, green ribbon+1, ruby earring, mitts/harness/gorget to put my resist at 147

This is an old shot of the fire resist set I use, its a safe bet I will have solid mage support at Tia.

Fire Resist

The only changes I have since made are:
1. I might use a Nim. Shield depending on how resists feel after the first flight.
2. I use 1 Crimson earring in place of the ruby (fairly cheap and I have other uses for the the +20HP)
and
3. For rings I use Triumph and Malflame ring. Malflame is very cheap probably cheaper than a Ruby and offers a touch more resist. The only reason I upgraded a triumph ring, was to save myself 1 inventory space since I could sell a flame ring.

Party up with your usual Whm & Brd and see where your resist lands with their buffs. How much +Resist gear you need can vary greatly depending on your support's gear and merits. Because of this it's really hard to give an exact number for how much in +resist gear you need without knowing how much their buffs will give you.

After their buffs 300 is the minimum resist you want, around 310 is what I shoot for and anything over 320 I think is overkill and you could be stacking other stats instead.

Sincerely,
Hankthetank

hmmm, i never saw the cerb bow. I talked to my friend again, he told me that you want a minimum of 300 resist. we always have a BRD, so that's 50, and any WHM we have should be minimum of 96, but I don't know how many have relic pants since we don't do jeuno at all. I was talking to one WHM who get 101 resist because of /SCH, so with the 151 from those, I'd want 149. I was looking at doing black ribbon instead of green+1, but cerb bow might be something I'd look at instead to give me 160 resist total. That way, all I would need is a WHM with full barspell merits and a BRD to get 306 fire resist. or a WHM/SCH with full merits for 311 resist. I'm at a bit of a loss for back though, since I normally use high breath mantle for the enmity+. My other options are really just resentment cape or boxer's mantle. The malflame is also a good option.

well having a fire resist set is handy for much more than just taimat. Youll be suprized at how useful it can be. the ZNM bomb was my most resent occasion where the fire resist set actualy pully the low man group i was in to victory.

Also, alot of these peices have multiple resists, making them quite handy in Campaing ot solo fights. While /rdm and +50 resist all, i tank the war machine just fine while all around my perish. Its actualy quite fun to do. lol aside from the odd fountain.... In addition, with barspell and the core set of resist gear i mention later in this post I have yet to be silenced/paralyzed and so on in events like Campaing.

My advice to you is to get as many of the resist all peices as possible. Items like Black Ribbon, Assault breastplate, Numinous Shield +1, the Wlegs and Wfeet combination, and so on. You will definately find more usage out of these sort of peices than ones with only fire resist on them. Of course youll still need some Fire resist only gears as those tend to carry big bonuses to the element to round the set of gear out to 300 (with buffs). But youll have a core set of equipment that is good for any situation, helping you to reduce inventory demands.

You don't need HQ shield, earrings, or black ribbon (green+1 is fine). The only expensive piece is the cerb mantle (and it's kinda cheap on my server now) but believe me it's great for more than just fire resist and I strongly recomend you get one.

Oh and fire resist is the way to go on Tia, -mdt/mdb just doesn't cut it cause your not just taking a 1 magic attack your taking a whole lot of them.

What about things like Bahamut? fire resistance set? or -MDT% ?
Ive tanked him before, but never with any sets, well be going again, was curious to see which set would be best.

I agree, but it's more because even if you don't resist at all (which happens), you're not going to get 1-shotted.

On Bahamut, I wouldn't go full fire resistance gear (I'd also TP burn it, but that's another discussion). Instead, I'd go with a combination of -MDT/MDB and Fire resistance in other slots. You should be able to get about 110-120 or so fire resistance and be able to stack plenty of stuff in other slots, like Lamian Kaman(+1), Iron Ram Lance, Merman's Rings/Earrings, Resentment Cape, etc.

Think of the mixed set as prevention from getting 1-shotted.

In 40+ Tiamat kills i have never taken more than 250dmg in my fire resist gear. There is no danger of being 1-shotted even without fire resist gear or -MDT/MDB it's just incredibly taxing on MP. As far a BahaV2 idk because we always just zerg him. I have heard if your tanking him Fire Resist works well for Megaflare and Gigaflare however -MDT/MDB is better for Terraflare because if you don't resist your will be 1-shotted (or so I hear).

Edit: Sorry Scar I misread your post.

You need more FR, in my FR set I take between 10-55 dmg, but thats with Carol merited barfira and Shell V. A super NIN FR set up will take only 0-5 dmg in air lol

Having more resist won't make the magic damage do less than 1/10 its max. A ninja with 330 resist will still take 20 or so damage a fireball with shell V, unless they have Phalanx 2.

dmg that high is very rare. You don't always resist all of it. As it is here is my fire build.

hrotti / numinous shield / cerberus bow / empty

green ribbon+1 / jeweled collar / ruby earring / ruby earring

legionnaire's harness / tarasque mitts / ruby ring / malflame ring

cerberus mantle / water belt / crimson crimson cuisses / power sandles

That's +164 fire resist along with BRD carol and fully merited WHM barspells with af2 or blessed gear. Trust me it's plenty. Most of the time the dmg is negligible however even with all that resist on rare occasion a high number will slip through. I can cure back the dmg taken in a flight with 1 Cure III.

Severely necrobumping this as well for the same reason as the post I necro'd 2 minutes ago. Could we add this to the sticky as well for making a resist build? Pretty please?

Dont shoot me for double necro'ing at 630 am prz >.<

~Cwell

PS. Or would it be better if I made a little mini guide utilizing these threads and asked to sticky that? Wouldn't take me long at all, just let me know if there's interest please.

Couldn't you have just pmed a mod or the guy who can edit the stickies and ask him to add this thread, with a link included in your message from you to him.
