PLD Equipment - Magic Resistance & Haste Gear

Great items to macro in when a spell is going off and can't be prevented.

Some pieces can easily be macroed into Rampart and swapped out after the spell hits.

Keep in mind that -Magic Damage Taken caps at about 50%, and Shellra V with merits offers about 25%. Past that, if you aren't using a resist setup, Magic Defense Bonus in large chunks is another way to reduce magic damage.

Elemental Resistance

Stacking a large amount of resistance to a certain element can cause Magic Damage to be completely or partially resisted.

300 total resist is the number to aim for, meaning you'll need 150+ in gear, plus WHM Barspells, plus Carol.

There are so many pieces of gear that offer these stats, that I am only going to list ones that offer resistance for several elements, or large amounts for one or more elements that are commonly used.

If you are looking for further gear to resist a certain type of element, please refer to the Auction House or an Advanced Search option.

PLD Equipment - HASTE Gear

Why Haste Gear?
2 reasons.

DDing: Haste means that you attack faster, resulting in faster TP gain.

Recasts: This is why PLD/NIN stacks Haste, to get Flash down to 22 seconds, Utsusemi: Ichi to 15, and Utsusemi: Ni to 22 (with the help of our WHMs, RDMs and BRDs)

"Enhances Fast Cast" will cause your spell to actually finish casting faster, which is really nice for trying to get Ichi off on a fast attacking MOB.

Looking good so far. Just figured I'd note your DD guide currently lacks Hecatomb, as well as the Gigas line of STR bracelets (Enky/Pallas/Alky).

Yeah, I have those saved under a file, putting them under DD and the Gigas under HP also, but thanks for noticing and mentioning it, I'm sure I'll overlook a lot the first time.

Great guide.
Just two things I would change..
Hauteclaire could be added to the DD swords section, as well as an alternitive to Mac+1 (Tutelary).
I say Hauteclaire because it has Acc+, high base damage (lower with company's hidden effect, but with acc as well as a Additional effect: Light damage).

Don't forget the Ice Shield as a standard tanking shield. I'm probably one of the few people who actually use it, but it comes in extremely handy. Mostly it's best for soloing though due to the proc rate on the Ice Spikes. Looks pretty **** good so far though.

Thanks for the compliments, and believe me I am nowhere near done.

Didn't have a chance to work on it yesterday or today, but expect more in the coming days.

I had planned to put Ice Shield in tanking Shields and Haut in DD, but definetly appreciate you two noticing and mentioning it.

Bear with me though, I promise you what is up now is just copied over from the old guide + basic listings for the expanded categories, this thing is NOWHERE near complete.

hey bud dont forget this 1 ok its really nice piece of equipment for us. ^_~

Ice Trousers http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=11262
Auction House: Armor - Legs
Slot: Legs
Def: 25 Vs. Fire: 3 Vs. Water: -1
Enchantment: Ice Spikes
Jobs: Bard, Beastmaster, Blue Mage, Corsair, Dark Knight, Dragoon, Ninja, Paladin, Ranger, Red Mage, Samurai, Thief, Warrior
Races: ALL

Here is what I got so far

Ice spikes - Must have the trousers on all times and it last 5 min, 5 min recast

Proc rate - 5 damage to Lesser collibri (at 75) every time and proc rate for Paralyze from what I notice is as good as a RDM ice spikes.

TME+1/+2 swords are great till Espadon+1.

The TME+2 is especially amazing (is about 100k on my server).
Has a similar DPS to Espadon+1 and that doesn't even take the +12 ATK into consideration. Considering you are pting in TAU at those levels the added effect is always working for you.

Has a similar DPS to Espadon+1 and that doesn't even take the +12 ATK into consideration. Considering you are pting in TAU at those levels the added effect is always working for you.

I assume that you mean this sword:

Tactician Magician's Espadon +2 52 Dmg: 39 Dly: 241 Outside Nation's Control: HP: 20 Attack: 20

Unfortunately, due to the fact that TAU areas are not subject to conquest, conquest status dependent stats Never Work in TAU areas including the ones that require the area to be outside of your nations control! This is true even if you forgo Sanction and have Signet instead!

Yeah, I have to finish this, at least get it going.

If anyone wants to take it over, PM me, otherwise I will update as often as I can.

Added Food, Curing Gear, and HMP Gear tonight.

Still have to add the above suggestions, will do that soon.

Let's get this stickied and knock out my old guide.

You left out Tutelary for endgame tanking swords. Some do still use it for the HP and DEF bonuses.

Added:

Gigas line of Bracelets to DD and HP gear.
Hecatomb Gear to DD.
Ice Shield to Endgame Tanking.
Ice Trousers to XP Gear.
Hauteclaire to DD.
TM Espadon +1/2 to DD.

I'm not going to put Tutelary in the Endgame Tanking section.
I thought about this for several days, because I want to be fair and give options, but I really feel that it is inferior in that category and is best served for a Max HP setup, and not full-time tanking. Hope this doesn't step on anyone's toes, but I just can't recommend it over the other options. (Several of which are just as easy to get)

Suggestion: Degen (+1) for Kazham 25-29, as it is a Rapier type sword, and so does piercing damage for a +25% bonus on Mandragoras.

Note that Tuck looks like it should do piercing damage, but it is a Bilbo type sword, and they do normal slashing damage.

Now now, no need going about being a **** for no reason. It's a good sword for a max HP > Initial SW damage on a mob.

It was merely a suggestion, and it is used by some people. If you're going to put Durandal in your guide as a valid sword option, I don't see why Tutelary wouldn't be.

Credos, Touche....

I'm thinking about how to re-do the endgame Swords, all inclusive, but "in their place", if that makes sense.

Durandal and Tutelary belong in the "Swords you're better off NPCing or selling to some sucker who doesn't know any better" category...

I mean sure, if you want to tack on 15 damage to a Spirits Within, carry around a Tutelary. That's about all it's good for. Even then, I'd take the extra Enmity+4 and 15 less damage on that Spirits Within myself....

In the food section, when you say base defense, what are you referring to? Your defense with no gear and no buffs?

Sorry for the confusion, what I meant is that it's a great back piece all the way to 75, much better than Royal or Gigant for XP tanking.

NCCoda for a DD exp build would you recommend?

PCC/PCA + Chiv for WS
or
Shield Torque + Chiv for WS

I kinda like the Peacock but I'm not sure if it's good to 75 like it is for other DD jobs.

I can skill up shield using other events or possibly alternating Torque and Peacock between levels.

Are you sure about the TME +1/+2 sword line....
52: T.M. Espadon +1/2 (Attack Boost in Areas Outside Nations Control)(Not TOAU)

I thought the Attack Boost was always active but the HP Boost is only active in Areas Outside Nations Control. The TME icon would lead me to believe this is the case. If not I have 2 x +2's to sell asap.

Just one thing I'd change, and that's mentioning that size 1 shields are great for skill up early on, though when tanking, yes, size 3 shields are ideal. Other than that, kudos to you, Coda.

VeyronMick,

Thanks for noticing the TM Espadon +1/2 Attack Bonus, that was a slipup on my part, and the Attack Bonus is always active, sorry about that.

As far as the PCC/Shield Torque question, I would say that it depends on your other gear and what you are fighting. If you have enough other DD gear to either eat Attack Food or Defense Food and still hit reliably with the PCC, personally I would use this. On the other hand, though, if you lack the other DD gear that's acceptable at that level range (65, meaning Hauby, Life/Potent Belt, ACC ring) and still have to eat Sushi to hit a good %, or are overcamping to the point that you can't hit reliably, the benefits of the Shield Torque would outshine the PCC, in my opinion.

Although ACC+10 is really awesome, don't forget that every Shield Block gains extra TP and cuts down damage, which might benefit you more if you're getting smacked around tanking something a little too early.

Flagstaff,

Thanks for the nice words, and mentioning the Shield Size and Skill Up equation, I'll edit that into the beginning right now.

Something else I just noticed, that could be added since this is a multi-racial guide to tanking.
On us Tarus, and I say this with experience in the field of tanking on PLD with it, damage is almost a non-existent factor, and we should concentrate on staying alive no matter what.
This is why I say you may want to add macroing in a Light staff for curing, when you have no other option, mostly because light staff + hospitaler = +15% cure, and that's a good difference, especially in the later levels when you have cure IV, and it can be cruical to living. The small amount of time you'd be shieldless would almost never be a factor, since you're supposed to time curing around strikes anyway. So I propose this;
/equip main "Light Staff"
/equip ear1 "Hospitaler Earring"
/ma "Cure x" <me>
/wait x
/equip main "Weapon X"
/equip sub "Shield X"

And you could either make another macro to re-attach your earring, or manually pur it back on.
Just a suggestion, from a retired Taru PLD
[EDIT: Also on the lines of taru tanking, you may want to add the physical earring to the guide.]

[EDIT AGAIN: Also, you might want to add the TM Espadon +1/+2 to the sword guide, since it adds HP depending on what nation you're in, and who owns the area you're leveling in. Plus, it has nicer stats, and the +1 was cheaper than the normal for some reason on Quetzalcoatl)

Added TM +1/2 to the 10-60 Guide.

While macroing the Staff and Earring in is a nice boost to Curing, swapping your weapon causes you to lose TP, and by the level that you can equip the Light Staff and Earring, PLD can contribute to the damage with Weaponskills, so I personally would be very weary about doing this, not to mention that most mages are not comfortable curing someone who is blinking all the time.

Doing this would have it's places, but in a general guide I wouldn't recommend it for your average XP party.

First of all, excellent work NC!

Okay, I was wondering how ya'll feel about Qiqirn Sash/+1 for waist slot. It seems like it'd be good for the level you can use it (40). It has higher defense than the warrior's belt +1, as well as 12(14) mp AND 2(3) hMp.

So... whattya think? Good? Bad? Add to the guide?

Added Fowling Earring, Trump Crown, Askar Gambieras today.

Did not add Light Solea since there are options with higher defense, and the EVA+ is pretty much a moot point on PLD that level.

Mohwba Sash is listed under the MP Recovery list.

Well there was one person on Cait Sith who has been trying to sell it for some time now. It was 12 million the last time I had checked on it. I ran out to Batallia Downs and he was out there and it was set at 4.5 million. I figured if I didn't buy it I would never see it again. I've wanted it for like two years. No real reason why, I just wanted it Smiley: lol

Came in handy last night on Kirin. I wanted to see if hate was going to be an issue while subbing /Nin. I didn't particularly want to try it out for the first time on Nidhogg so used it last night on Kirin. The elemental traits on it saved me a few times where normally I would have been dead and hate wasn't anywhere even close to being an issue.
