I realize people have most likely asked these before, but honestly, it's annoying as hell to navigate these forums and searches never seem to yield what I'm looking for. So here it goes.
I used to play FFXI years ago, many years in fact. I realize things have probably changed a lot since then. I'm going for Warrior and I don't want to suck at being one. Back when I used to play, I was hailed as a damn good Warrior, but I'm not sure if that'd be the same now. I'm thinking not, since things have probably changed quite a bit.
Main question. Weapons. Axe and Great Axe? I should use them both, yes? If not, explain what I should be using and how I should be using it please. Should I start using one before the other? Previously, I always started with Great Axe, but God knows how it is now.
Other thing is, I should be prepared to both be able to Tank and DD, correct? Unless that's changed as well...
Um, I guess what I'm asking is tips on the current standard for Warriors? I don't want to add to the problem of craptastic Warriors, and by that I mean people who are doing it all wrong and just getting in the way of things. I'd rather not suck.

Axe and GAxe would be optimal. Though you may find that you'll never wind up using Axe all that much. 2 handed weapons got such a big boost to their damage that it's hard to justify wielding Axes, even if you're /NIN.
If you're prepared to DD, then that's good enough as far as "being prepared to tank and DD". In the really early levels, it's not a bad idea to eat def food. And if a party does wind up asking you tank, then you shouldn't full time Berserk. But other than those slight changes, you probably won't do much differently as a WAR. Don't bother with Def/VIT gear unless you can do so without compromising DD stats.
Subjobs: /SAM and /NIN will cover parties, /DNC works really well for solo. /DRG is raw DD power, but it might get you killed.

Weapons
Great Axe is the main weapon I use, but also Axe/Axe and Axe/Sword (although much more rare for me to be doing so anymore). Some around here advocate a wide diversity of weapon skill (GAX, AXE, SWD, PLM) but in the current state of play it's pretty tough to beat out a GAX, assuming all other things being equal.
Tanking
If you're really good at Warrior, there will be times where you are tanking by default, such as in some of the older, easier content or in parties in Abyssea. However, on anything big and nasty you won't be able to survive like a Paladin. PLD tanks have received so many boosts to their abilities to tank that WAR is not even considered a tank anymore.
Subjobs
I typically am /NIN 95% of the time, unless I am certain of the skills of (i) the healers I am with; (ii) that the other DD can keep up with me; (iii) and kill speed isn't an issue. If those 3 conditions are met, I go /SAM. In some rare cases I will go /THF (used to do this on Dark Ixion, similar to an old school Byakko fight where just keeping it on the tanks was a priority), but I don't tend to see the need any longer. /DNC is also nice for easy soloing and self-healing.
Tips
Retaliation has been introduced allowing us a chance to counter with damage if we take damage. This has probably saved my butt more times than I can count. Keep this up full time until you need to travel since it slows down movement speed.
Restraint and Fencer have also been introduced. Keep Restraint up full time.
Get AF3 from Scars of Abyssea ASAP. Try to get a Vermeil Bhuj ASAP, the Added Effect: Amnesia procs quite regularly. Start working on the Trial of the Magians you would like (GAX, AXE...)
edit: Forgot about /DRG, which I took to 39, but left there to level more pressing subjobs for my COR. I think I'm going to test this out more and see what I can get away with.

What level Warrior are you starting at?
In the early levels, the Great Axe weaponskill Shield Break is fantastic because it lowers an enemy's evasion, thus making the ACC of you and all your party members who melee go up. This is highly underestimated in value.

I'm having to restart my entire game. Good times. So I'm starting from scratch so to speak. I do vaguely remember some of this, so that's good. I just want to be an asset instead of a burden.
