Hey everyone, just started this game yesterday and tried all the beginning jobs to level 5 and warrior was definitely the best out of all.

So I am deciding to stick with warrior to 18, then level white mage to 15, then continue warrior to 30 to unlock Dark Knight.

Now here's the questions.......

1) Which abilities from the warrior class will carry over to Dark Knight?
2) Is it ok to stick with Scythe instead of going between Great Axe, Sword and Scythe?
3) Does Dark/War make a good combination to be my first 75? (I will plan on taking War Primary after 75 on Dark)
4) Is there any particular strategy or leveling guide I should follow, besides bash things I can take while leveling my weapon skill?
5) Also what noob weapons / gear should I save up for on the AH that I can use for both War and Dark?

Thanks in advance, I read the guides but none seemed to clarify these questions for me. (and be nice I am a complete noob to this game and just started so u might have to dumb it down for me to understand)

Hi, welcome to FFXI.

This is a bad idea. You should level Monk to 15, then continue to 30.

None, except those you get from having WAR as a subjob. You will keep all of your Combat skills, however.

If you mean as DRK, you should use Gaxe until level 60 anyway. Also, on that note you should use SHIELD BREAK, regardless of other weaponskills. Trust me it is better for your party, even though it doesn't do that much damage.

It does until level 60, then you should switch to subbing Samurai or Ninja, depending on your party.

That pretty much sums it up actually.

Neckchopper. Which server are you on? Someone owes you a free Great Axe.

You're welcome.

Ok, so I guess I will put my warrior on hold and level my monk to 15 as per your advice. I just thought it was kinda feasible to heal after a battle to cut on some downtime, or god forbid a low level party I was in needed more emnity towards me that provoke couldn't handle.

And **** I was hoping I could stay scythe since it looks so nice when you swing and wanna cleave a mobs head right off!! Guess I got to go grab a GAxe. Also I am on Alexander server

Shield break is a GAxe WS Im guessing?

Thanks again for such a fast reply!!

If anyone sees me in game and can offer help or suggestions and such feel free to contact me!

Bug Turin until he gives you a Gaxe. Tell him Nilatai sent you. Smiley: laugh

SHIELD BREAK is indeed a Gaxe weapon skill. It's the first one you get as a matter of fact. It's awesome because it lowers the mob's evasion, which in turn increases your Acc vs that mob.

Scythe isn't really the best weapon to use until level 60 on Dark Knight. Smiley: grin

I would almost put a caveat there though. WAR/WHM would be a poor, poor choice for party play -however- if he was soloing his way to 30, as so many of us do now... WAR/WHM with FoV Refresh may not be a bad choice, considering he wouldn't have /DNC available.

Yes, but it's easier to get him in the habit of picking sensible subs now.

I know this is nooby to ask, but why would monk be more sensible to sub for a warrior (in either party or solo play)

I dont know a whole lot about what subjobs do/add

They basically tack half an extra job onto your main, with all the relevant traits and abilities (now, a lot of jobs will get a good number of their more useful abilities pretty early on), as well as boosts to your base stats. MNK is a useful low-level sub for WAR because, at low levels, it offers you Boost and Counter.

WHM on the other hand is not, because you cure like half a WHM, and you get almost no MP to do it with. Your STR also goes down, and unimportant pansy mage stats like INT and MND go up, which are absolutely no good to a WAR because very few things you will do on WAR ever require INT or MND.

Well that makes a whole lot of sense then! those monk skills and traits that can carry over for my warrior would make me hit harder as well as counter!

Thanks a lot!

No problem. Keep in mind that you'll want to unlock NIN and SAM as soon as possible because WAR/MNK's effectiveness wanes very rapidly after about 30.

Also, never sub /THF. I will leave that one for these wonderful beer-chugging axe crazies to explain.

More accurately, don't use /THF for anything but farming. And even then /DNC will be a better farming sub, as you'll never have to rest.

what if his linkshell buddies are willing to lend him the wyvern equips? do you think /drg would be good for him then till 60 when he'd switch to /sam?

He does have to unlock DRG first, and he mentioned being more interested in DRK. So the only answer I can give you is "I don't know".

/DRG is superior in terms of Damage yes. However, as Lucinus said that's another job he has to unlock that he's not particularly interested in.
