Hey folks,
My baby brother decided to pick FFXI up not too long ago, and I figured I'd go ahead and jump back in to keep him company. I haven't played since like 2004... I think there was only one expansion back then. Real life kinda did its thing, and took me in a different direction, so I regrettably had to give the game up. After starting over and getting to level 5, I'm already noticing a few fairly minor changes to the game, but my question is more specific to the warrior class.
Is it still more or less the same game? Axe/GAxe, level MNK and THF, crush skulls, yadda yadda...
Oh, and on a side note, is GrumpyWookie still around these days? He doesn't know this, but he single-handedly convinced me to stick with WAR rather than aiming for SAM or DRG as I originally intended when I picked the box up off the shelf those years ago. His spirit pulled me in, and the stories of encounters with mice and buffalo and the like were icing on the cake.

I would say you pretty much have the standard(more or less) we still crush skulls (we just do it harder and faster now), and we have a bit more options.
Maybe you know this by now, 2-hand weapons got a big update back in 2007 and they are much more reliable now, also with one of the expansions that you are not familiar with(Treasures of Aht Urhgan), introduced a new gamma of piercing weak mobs(colibri & imps) making other weapons(like polearm) viable on tp burn middle level(54-65) and merit situations.
We don't use /thf anymore(except for certain endgame activities) we never should but sadly it wasn't fully acknowledged by the community until a couple of years ago, on the bright side SAM got many interesting updates(hasso {Please Check it}) and our understanding of Store TP abilities(please check this post) is better leaving us with more room to get maximum advantages from /Sam abilities and traits.
/Nin is still the most used option for the convenient damage mitigation of utsusemi.

P.D. leveling is much faster now, you may want to hang around in DRG or SAM forums to consider the option to level more than one job.

Oh wow, I was afraid of that... /THF was my favorite too. I think I spent more time doing homework than actually playing, so more research shouldn't be too painful. I am glad to see two-hand got improved. Few things are more satisfying than a delicious 300%TP/Zerk Sturmwind to the face with the old Neckchopper (that took two weeks to farm up for, lol.)
If /THF is no longer viable, then what are my options before advanced jobs? just straight /MNK and hope to hell someone will trust me enough to give me a chance to hold hate? I have heard mention of two-handed tankage, which makes me feel all warm and... well, don't tell anyone, but fuzzy... on the inside.

/NIN and /SAM, as damage mitigation is of higher priority, are the main two to focus on. /SAM is excellent for both giving more offense to your great axe with Hasso, along with a stance for damage mitigation in the form of Seigan+Third Eye. Con to this is, it's useless if you should want to dual wield. /NIN is pretty much the gold standard as far as damage mitigation is concerned, and it enhances you should you want to dual wield. Con here is that it doesn't enhance great axe at all.
Personally, I stick with /NIN mainly because that, while it doesn't enhance my great axe, unlike /SAM it lets me at least switch between dual wield and great axe on a whim. Both are perfectly fine.
There are other subjobs, like /DNC for soloing, and /COR for 20-30, and /DRG for "HAY LOOK I CAN GET KILLED FAST!" They've got their uses here and there.
Edit: Oh, and basically now tanking = damage dealing. Most exp parties you join will have you (and the other damage dealers) going balls-to-the-wall so that the monsters die before things become problems. So really, the better you are at being a damage dealer, the better you are at being a tank. This is also why damage mitigation is so important.
