New Warrior needs weapons advice..Follow

I'm a LVL. 10 Galka Warrior, currently soloing in Bastok on Carbuncle. I eventually want to Tank, either by just staying warrior or subbing /MNK or going PLD/WAR later on.

A friend bought me a Great Axe (Butterfly Axe) when I got to Level 5, which has been great (both damage-wise and financial-wise). My skill for it is currently in the mid-20's.

However, I'm now wondering if I should switch to a weapon (Sword, Axe, etc) where I can equip a shield as well to help my defense when I start tanking.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Gt Axe holds hate really well (especially the Neckchopper which you can either buy (around 40K)or get from a NM))

Agreed. Use both.

Great Axe is amazing when the mob has high defense, and you need the extra damage to hold hate. The loss of a shield isn't a big deal. Also, for those times when you aren't tanking, you definitely want a two-handed weapon.

One-Handed Axe won't hold hate as well, but if you are taking a beating and need the extra defense and chance to block, it's nice to have the option. Also, if you plan to ever go War/Nin, the option to dual-wield two axes is available.

Focus on those, and if you have time, level up another weapon to respectable levels as well. Having Great Sword ready is very useful, as it allows you to set up Distortion without sacrificing too much damage compared to the Great Axe. Neither Axe or Great Axe can be used to set up Distortion, and Distortion is a skillchain that your parties will be using very often once Thieves learn Viper Bite.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll probably go pick up a shield an axe once I have some cash saved up.
