Just reached level 30. (Returning Player)Follow

I just returned to FFXI a week ago after a long break. I reached level 30 as a blm. My question is now what?

1) Do I really go from lvl 30-90 in Abyssea?

2) Also, I am a bit low on gil. IS there any good ways for me to earn money than crystal farming?

Thanks in advance =]

No you don't do 30-90 in Abys. You should normal party it up, level sync, or look for GoV parties.
Here is a post I did in General FFXI forum a few weeks back, it covers some of the places you could go/make a party for.

Edit: I would stay out of Abys until you 75. I'm sure mage classes can go earlier tho. But lv30 you will be useless, and will probably just die, a lot.

As for gil, there are tons of ways to make it. I don't feel like going into it. Each server is different. What you need to do is go sit at the AH and look through all the material listings and see what is selling for what and then try to farm them (like beehive chips, or lizards tails). At lv40 you can start to do the BCNMs that drop Uts:Ni and Phalanx, if you have the seals for a run.

Don't forget the old pet camps!

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?fjob=3&mid=11643140656968310

It's a little tricky at first, especially in some of the more dangerous camps, but you can solo good exp and it really picks up at 51+.

Hopefully SE didn't add level 80+ mobs to all of these camps in the last update..I haven't checked, but some of them may not be viable options anymore.

Frankly, it takes a mammoth amount of time to get from 30-75 on BLM solo, made even more time demanding by the fact that you can't exactly fill your wallet very well at such low levels to gear yourself and make the progress. Even if you were to buy some gil so you could just XP and not farm, you could expect it to take 74 hours of solid XPing (at a highly skilled rate of 10k xp/hr) to get that 30-75.

Factor in the XP loss and time delay from deaths, travel times, and misc quests to gear yourself along the way, and you are looking at one hundred plus hours. In fact, I'd wager that I myself could not do it in under 200 hours on a fresh, unassisted account. And, not to brag, but I could make good work of a speed run.

So ask yourself, do you want to spend 200+ game hours on an exercise in futility, or do you want to get to relevant content in a day or three? I'd Abyssea it in a heartbeat. Then all you have to do is learn how to play the job and skill it up. A great time to do that is while acquainting yourself with TotM staves, which are nigh requisite to being outstanding.

P.S. Once you get into Abyssea, you have the solid source of income that is NPC or AHing anything and everything you can get your hands on. Augmented items out of Gold Pyxides, Cruor armor, Dom Ops augmented weapon, Battle Trophy augmented armor, and pop items all fetch a moderate price that can more than fund your character's basic to mid range gear needs. I would go as far as to say that if I absolutely had to, I could make my character's living off of cashing in on Abyssea by-products, and would not need to stoop to buying gil just to get the capitol necessary to keep FFXI a game rather than a job.

Thanks so much for the post. I am confused though, everyone keeps telling me that the content in Abyssea is for level 75+ players. How will I be useful?

That's the problem with using abyssea for your first job - you won't be. Once you build up a sizeable chunk of cruor (it's like Abyssea conquest points) you will be able to buy a few stacks of keys so you can open up chests for an exp alliance.

But your first time in abyssea you wouldn't be able to offer anything at level 30 (aside from manually opening chests, which won't get you far in a party)

The only way your going to get into abyssea is 1. know someone to let you leech or 2. pay someone to let you leech.

You will be underskilled you will have to work on that after.

You will be a key master in abyssea to be usefull. In a good party so many chest drop that you will need to pop open whats needed or destroy whats not needed as soon as possible since there can only be so many chest in the zone at one time.

A decent tip, if you are underskilled, find what zone you need to go to, too skill up. After you know that find what's farmable in that zone and skill up there.

This really helped alot. Thanks everyone. So I'll definitely start collecting Traverser Stones and Cruor asap. I'll probably solo exp some more and farm for gil til I'm able to efficiently obtain Cruor in Abyssea.

Dont solo more exp man. Do GOV. I dont know about 30+ but I went in at gusgan and did GOV there from 12-30. Alot of people can get alot of good exp from those.

The nice part about GOV you get stat and hp/mp bonuses from each page you complete. So as long as you dont leave the zone and find syncs to keep you in that area you can lvl quickly.

The nice part about GOV, while it does kill your skills, you can stay in the same gear for certain lvls and not have to do the minor changes in gear between the good gear range.... What I mean is Seer's gear is usally first then you pick up what int pieces you can inbetween till you hit af.

If you did GOV 25-50 you could save gil until you got to af or an abyssea party which would allow you to save gil till you could buy a leech spot.

If you havent done abyssea, and this is a long shot. You might want to keep an ear out and see if anyone does any clearity abyssite runs and or Soujoun abyssite runs. Clarity, reduces cool down time of traverser stones by 4 hours, and the soujoun adds more time per stone turned in. If you see them just ask if you can tag along. Take Sneak, invis and a RR item with you and just stand there and let them get it for you.

I always do a shout if there is room for people that may need that stuff. So maybe someone else will :)

Lol thats what im saying dont solo there. You want to get into a party or alliance if you can its all about knocking out pages. The more pages you do the more exp you get :P. If you prefer to solo though I understand :)

If you leech your blm to 90 as a first job in abyssea, definitely level a scholar sub. With Dark arts and elemental magic skills from gear, can hit around 320 skill with sub 200 skill on blm, because dark arts raises your skill to D cap if I remember right. This is a huge help for leveling elemental, enfeebling, and dark magic inside abyssea while doing enough dmg with decent atma to at least keep azure kills going.

Can a level 30 BLM get any exp from doing campaign battles? Can you get into them at that level at all? I've been having a lot of luck doing CBs on my 80-ish DNC, but that's a whole different animal.

There are huge penalties to your exp in campaign if you are under level 60 if I remember correctly. So I'd imagine you'd get terrible exp at level 30.

Thanks for the advise. I'm really trying to avoid being a leech in aby. But it seems that anything else is a waste of time.

Gov parties used to be great a little while back, but it has died down some so find a party for it might be hard now.

Your best bet really would to either key or pay some gil for a leech spot in abyssea.
