Mana Wall - Tricks / Uses / QuestionsFollow

Although the obvious uses of our new job ability are obvious, I haven't seen a dedicated thread yet discussing the finer details of Mana Wall. Pretty much everything can be found in the wiki article on Mana Wall, or should be added, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to share information here too.

Based on reports from others, Mana Wall appears to convert 2 damage taken to 1 MP lost. I'm not sure about which way this is rounded, but we should be able to test that. While that's not nearly as efficient as a cure or a drain, it makes the ability much more acceptable for general purpose use.

Mana Wall DOES convert damage from DoTs. It doesn't allow you to rest with a DoT on, but it also does not prevent the DoT from waking you if you're slept. This was particularly handy for me last night against Nightmare Sheep (Dynamis Valkurm), as I was able to use poison to keep myself awake AND have a defensive buff on.

Enmity: I haven't seen anything yet, but I'm hoping someone can point me to testing that has already been done. My two questions are: what enmity does the JA itself generate, and how much (if any) enmity do you lose when taking damage with your MP?

One of the big things about mana wall, is that it has a *HUGE* damage reduction when using with manafont. I was seeing something like a 5-10% total damage taken during mana wall + Manafont while kiting Diabolos in Dynamis-Tavnazia. Between manawall + movement speed + Convert -> BLM kiting is *really* possible now.

I find it great when you need to get that sleepga off without interruption.

I consider the ability far more useful than I initially expected it to be. It's fantastic to get that extra spell off because something resisted or whatever went wrong. Also, if you have a good eye on monsters and hate (or absolutely not, whichever applies), it can be used to save your hide fairly reliably (overnuking on HNM or the like comes to mind).

Manawall takes death to whole new levels! You don't just die with Manawall up, you'll get drained of the willpower to actually live on, too!

Man, getting one-shotted from 600 mp to 0 HP is fun.

Manawall is fairly useful when you are doing something that puts you in a party and you suddenly pull hate.

It is very situational in that subject though. Many times you are better off taking 500 damage than loosing 500 mp.

When soloing its a completely new way to kill yourself. Manawall so i can sleep the mob! Casting interrupted: Not enough mana.

I love using Mana Wall in Dynamis. But, once i hit 80, and was playing with various sub jobs in Abyssea, I decided to play around with it. The best thing that I have found with it is as 80 blm/rdm. I hit Mana Wall, then I hit Convert. That way, if some mob decides to AOE at that exact second, I dont converticide. I can still stay alive long enough to Cure myself and drain the mob before deactivating it.

Decided to try this out with /rdm once I got 80 tonight. I usually /sch and though getting an extra 50% reducition with stoneskin+mana wall would make for great survivability during events. Felt like I lost stoneskin a bit to fast though.

Just went to altep and tested on cactuar with 2 chars. 1000 needles dropped stoneskin and took somewhere around 75 mp. It seems you do not get the damage reduction till after stoneskin gets eaten.

This is what I would expect, really. Mana wall doesn't make you take half damage - it simply allows you to absorb 2 damage with 1 MP instead of 2 HP. If your stoneskin is up, then you're absorbing that damage with stoneskin and mana wall doesn't come into play.

Assuming capped stoneskin and perfect 2:1 dmg:mp, 75 mp lost is indeed the expected result. Someone might have to go get hit with 1000 needles while manafont is up and see if we can confirm a better dmg:mp ratio while it's active (I'd skip the stoneskin, just to get a more precise measurement).

My bad.

What I get for reading forums when I haven't completely woken up yet. Just noticed that he said he had another person with him. Without stone gorget 75 MP would have been right, as he said. Sorry for the misreading.

Also my bad. *goes back to bed*

I've noticed that restore chests often go unused (at least some of them do) during abyssea runs, especially when nobody really "needs" them. Well, to any BLM worth his manafont, an unused restore chest is an invitation for mayhem. That much should be obvious, but not every BLM seems to realize the potential here. And yes, manawall is key. Make sure you have cruor HP/MP/INT buffs, and some forbidden keys.

In short, starting from full HP/MP: Manafont -> Mana Wall -> nuke everything -> Convert -> nuke everything else -> key the chest -> start again.

The important thing is to convert to extend mana wall before you run completely out of MP. And by nuke everything, I mean go nuts. If your alliance is pulling multiple mobs at once, all the better for when you bust out the -gas. Don't bother to stop and cure yourself, either - just make everything dead.
