Tips to Avoid Getting Killed?Follow

#1 Jun 17 2010 at 9:04 PM Rating: Decent
I'm getting killed a lot as a level 15 BLM (no subjob) trying to solo in Tahrogi Canyon.

Honestly, I die a lot in this game. If I died less, I might have 2, maybe even 3 more levels than I do now, and thats past the loss of personal morale.

Anyone have any tips on how to avoid getting killed often?

Unlock BST and play as that. You get so used to dying that it hardly has an effect on you.

Stick to fighting Easy Prey mobs, and make sure you have signet on. When you get only 50 exp from a kill, it might look like it's only a little. But you can kill them fast enough that you'll wind up with the same amount of exp over a period of time, and you'll be in far less danger.

As above I would recommend trying weaker mobs. At low levels you are mainly reliant on melee damage, which BLM ain't great at. Unfortunately the lower levels really are very slow and tough, but don't give in!

Honestly, at that level solo is going to be hard work against mobile enemies. Consider limiting your prey to worms and cast from max range, worms cannot chase you down so if things look a bit shaky, you can just run away from them.

I would suggest keeping your party flag up though as you solo, might get lucky with a party invite that can get you through the rocky low levels, until you are able to unlock your subjob, and solo beastmen pets.

Wow, this post brings back a lot of memories. I too had a really hard time soloing as blm with no subjob in the Canyon. I died so much that I very nearly quit the game, thinking it was just too hard/annoying. The only advice I can give is, like the above, to stick to easy prey mobs. They give less exp per kill, but your chance of dying is much less. Stick it out until 18, then unlock your sub and level white mage. You'll be amazed at how much easier it is compared to what you're doing now!

When you've levelled WHM some, go back to BLM and get yourself to 20. This'll be easier with WHM sub. Then you can join xp parties in Qufim Island, and from then you'll be golden. Keep at it, it'll be worth it in the end!

Being masters of black magic and all, I think BLMs should have an Auto-Reraise job trait that's on constantly, since we constantly die anyway -.-

<Imperia> Hey look a bunn...
The Beach Bunny hits Imperia for 745 points of damage.
Imperia was defeated by the Beach Bunny.
<Imperia> wtf..

Subless BLM is rather difficult to start out on because at first you are unable to use your MP to heal yourself (which is a far better use of the MP than for attacking, at least early on). Get the best damage-dealing staff you can find, and as stated, make sure you have Signet on and stick to EP mobs.

Personally, trying to play ANY job solo using pet EXP camps (something that BLM primarily does) has made me get very used to dying. >_>

I started out as a subless BLM also. That was back in 2003/2004 when there was no combat bonus from signet, no FoV buffs, and EP meant "might kick your ***", and EP mobs gave as little as half as much XP as they do now. The food system was also a bit different, not that any NA players had either a clue about food or the gil to buy it. The closest thing to a wiki was my handwritten list of all the spells that each magic vendor sold. Oh, and there were no XP rings.

All that has changed. Don't get me wrong... subless BLM is still going to suck. But you need not be stuck fighting for your life against anything worth more than 15 xp. Do everything that Fynlar said above. In addition:
  • Find or make some sort of cheap food. Even Grilled Hare, which you can make yourself at minimal cost, is better than nothing.
  • Get an XP band. You should have enough CP now to buy one.
  • Use FoV to get more xp, and then use your tabs for FoV regen and refresh. Alternately, you can drink selbina milk for regen. Juice for refresh is an option too, but more expensive.

I can definitely vouch for the food thing. I tried eating meat leveling low level melee jobs. Let me tell you, +5 STR when you only have ~10 STR to begin with makes for pretty huge damage buffs. The same should go for eating Melon pie on low level BLM. Also cookies are an option if you'd like to be able to rest MP very fast.

Honey (dropped from bees) will give you +MP while resting, and you can farm it easily.

Also, there is an NPC in each starter city that will sell Meat Jerky for about 110g a pop.

This is my food of choice for fighting colibri when I'm feeling too cheap even for mithkabobs (and don't need sushi). While this may be intended as a low-level food, at higher levels it's still a solid 31-32 atk boost, which is still a bigger boost than you're probably getting from any one piece of your gear.
