Hello after playing on and off for such a long time i never really had any "fun" with any class in this game. I have tried most of the class and could never decide on one class to stick with. Until few weeks ago out of boredom i decided to take blm and level it a bit. Needless to say i found it extremely fun and now i think it might be my one and only class id like to play. Unfortunately galka have automatic handicap when it comes to mage jobs specially on this class that requires +INT and other equipments and not just +MP which makes it a bit more challenging. I now have 2/8 MP merits which i was leveling for my summoner and i wanted to say few things.

Should i continue to merit mp all the way to 8/8 this will take ages or will 4/8 be good enough to help with handicap? what about INT?

should i even bother with this? i enjoy the class a lot but the handicap sometimes makes it hard to play it.

Any info on galka blm is appreciated. I want to get started on blm but im considering atleast meriting MP 4/8 before i start up again.

Race.

Means.

Jack.

sh*t.

Play what you want, don't worry about your racial stats, voila.

If you're REALLY that worried about your mp/int stats (both can be adjusted for gearwise and neither will make a large difference), level pup to 75, get 5/5 magic skill and optimization merits, and get all the best nuking attachments. There you go, you can now nuke with the best of the blms and your mp no longer is an issue.

But seriously, galka blm is fine. And better yet, they got the hp and vit to survive more often than any little tarutaru wuss will from AoEs or pulling hate.

While you are correct that the OP should play what he wants and supplement his lack of racial statistics with gear, there is a thread of truth regarding galka/elvaan int/mp.

If you are dedicated to mage jobs, then yes merit mp 8/8. It will help. Also Int 5/5 will help more than you think. In essence, its a free snow ring so think of it that way. That being said, merit your magic skills first imo. 8/8 elemental and enfeebling are priority imo.

I understand your concern and they are valid points, but as the first reply stated, you can supplement your deficiencies with gear and merits; you just need to be dedicated to getting them completed.

Yes it will take you a bit more gear to proc a sorc. ring than a taru would need. Yes your base int will be far less than a taru would have. Yes your base mp will be far less than a taru would have.

Here's the thing though, all these deficiencies can be overcome with some hard work and dedication to the job.

I have been an Elvaan Black Mage for 4 years. It certainly hasn't been ideal, and if I started over I would not pick Elvaan, but I have been very successful. You have the luxury of having other 75s, which I did not when I leveled Black Mage. I would recommend meriting mp, I am 8/8. The reason I like my mp merits as my gear got a lot better, I had to take off my mp gear to put on int, elemental skill and MAB gear. Of course once I hit 75 my first merits were capping elemental and enfeebling, then ice and thunder potency.

Also, take the time to get the best gear. I usually out nuked tarus while I was leveling, because I took 3 months off leveling and mined and crafted and got all HQ staffs and all +1 items. I can't lie and pretend that Tarus, Mithra and Humes don't have it much easier than us Elvaan and Galka. While I was leveling though, often I would check a taru and see them wearing 4 total pieces of gear. Then they would ask "How is an elvaan outnuking me?"

Even at 75, if you fully merit BLM, you will be fine. I find myself outdamaging all but the most serious taru Black Mages. A lot of Black Mages just level it for endgame, and don't put a lot of time and effort into it. Its not particulary hard to shine at Black Mage end game if you fully research your gear, swaps, merits, etc. We can't lie to ourselves though and pretend we don't have hurdles to jump to compete. That being said, I fully recommend you to level Black Mage. Its lots of fun, and opens up some great low man, BCNMs, etc.

You're kidding yourself if you don't think 382 mp, 10 int doesn't make a difference. 5/10 macc, higher damage, and more than 2 full nukes more than galka from full mp. Race makes a fairly big difference for blm. That being said, galka can do just fine as blm, just be aware that you'll never be as good as you would if you were any other race.

I can't compare leveling galka BLM to taru or hume BLM because I only leveled galka BLM.

I thought it was easy to level galka BLM solo.

One thing you'll likely learn to do early that I rarely see other BLMs do is optimize your MP pool. It's rare, for example, that I see individuals own a 'max MP' set (i.e. a set that offers you almost no damage/ele skill, but does get your MP up). On BLM/RDM my MP pool sits around 1100 without food, but my optimal nuking set drops that all the way down to 600 or so. 500MP is roughly 3 tier IV spells.

When you're in situations where max MP is irrelevant (i.e. HNMs where your MP refresh/HMP is all that matters), being a galka matters a whole lot less other than the few points of INT--42 points or so (10 more INT, assume 1.85 MAB, HQ staff, no DWB) of damage between an equally geared/merited taru. On a 1K tier IV type spell, 42 points, while it is a difference, isn't worth not leveling a job IMO. :P

Although the extra 10 macc that the 10 int gives for many hnms is huge.

That's just a matter of other blms being lazy. A taru could just as easily have 1400 max mp, and 1k in full nuking gear. Though you do also have to remember that although you can get 3 extra tier4 nukes like that, the first nuke or two are still usually going to be resisted, and do crap damage even if they aren't, since you're losing almost all int/macc/mab gear, as well as staves (unless you're giving up 55 mp for staves, which i'm not entirely sure would be worth it, though it might be).

Race makes 0 difference with how to merit a BLM

End of argument

(If you wish to continue argueing which race is best, do carry on, but that pretty much answers the actual questions asked)

bimrog is right, he asked if its worth meriting those stats.

If you are gonna full time BLM of course it is.

If you were asking if you should reroll a Taru BLM instead of keeping a Galka BLM then I would say to reroll a Taru because you will never be able to achieve the same power as a Galka BLM compared to a Taru BLM.

Tarutaru's main weakness is their low hp. Being a Galka you will have high hp and probably won't be the most damaging BLM next to a decked out Taru so you won't have as much hate issues. Even if you did have hate issues you could definitely last 2 more rounds than a Taru, which is a huge advantage to your survival.

Well, 2 attacks over 2-3 is one thing. 2 attacks over 5+ with proper gear however isn't so significant. A good -dmg% build can drastically increase your survivability. -34/40% (or at least 33/38 with nq cape) is pretty easy to get, especially since 99% of mages don't realize how useful goliard legs are, and so don't usually want to compete for them.

You're underselling the process.

Max MP sets are for nuking down a mob solo, generally these are IT/VT and resists are not a problem on the first nuke (I do use staves even for the first nuke--mostly because right after I toss out the first tier IV I need to throw gravity on the mob which I do in as much enfeebling as MP I can stand to lose anyway).

The next nuke is done with a 'good amount' of MAB/INT, high return pieces are swapped (i.e. RSE2 hands for zenith, etc)

The 3rd nuke is done very close to full nuke gear with just a couple of minor exceptions like desert rope for penitent's (60MP for 1 INT), zenith +1 for demon +1 (55 MP for +2 INT), etc.

The numbers are usually about 70%, 90%, and 95% of a full tier IV nuke for those first 3 nukes (excluding ugly in that calc).

So I grant you a fairer assessment would be 2.5 full tier IV nukes.

Also, this is only necessary for mobs with lots of HP--buffalo and marids, so you can go through them in 1 MP pool.

Though I'm curious, where does the 55 MP come from? I think I'm missing an item--I get a delta of 40 MP (30/30 for ask/astral vs 20 from a readily available strap).

I was counting astral aspis instead of shield, and i forgot about mp from strap, my bad.

67 Galka Blm

I have Solo'd and duo'd 20-66 of the time and only have recently started doing Manaburns (66-9k till 68).

What I have noticed... (me Vs. the other members)
# of Spells Cast - Our Mp pool is def weak and cannot cast as many spells as the other races can.
Damage of Spells - (I am a well geared Galka (i dont have a sorc ring)) My damage is usually the highest damage done out of the group.

Once you get to your RSE, Galka is pound for pound the best BLM lvl 30-???
At lvl 45 is when I started to notice the other races getting an advantage.

Merits I had when starting BLM 4 Mp merits

But if you enjoy blm and thats what you want to do 8/8 MP for sure
As far as the Group 1 Merits go Im not to sure what they advise
I am considering Maxing out 1 spell and Elemetal Seal time
then for Group 2 Which Ever potency i maxed i will max that AM2 spell for sure.
Enfeebling and Elemental

with the announcement of new campaign medals im working on merits to bank for when i hit blm to 75!

Oh god no. Do ice+thunder. You'd seriously be better off not meriting anything than meriting ES (due to time saved, them being 99.9% useless, etc).
