I'm looking at squeezing haste and fast cast gear into some macros (Stun, drain and aspir mostly) and I'm wondering how the macro would have to work.
Based on how I have to do some macros with charm on bst I'm afraid it would have to be:
/equip X
/wait 1
/ma Stun <t>
for the haste/fast cast to reduce the recast timer. If that's the case then I won't use it in stun because 1 second could be huge.
So, am I right or wrong about needing a /wait 1 for the effects to trigger?

With a little self-testing I do seem to be getting a 55 sec recast on drain with Wally turban macro'ed in and no wait so maybe I was wrong.

Fast cast needs to be on before you start casting, and haste needs to be on before the cast happens.
So
/equip fast cast gear
/ma stun
/equip haste gear
And no, you don't need the wait, you can switch gear in the middle of casting, before it happens, but you don't need to wait to cast. It'll still take effect. I recommend putting on your gear after you start casting for stun because you can normally blink the animation away and save time.

I was under the impression fast cast and recast reduction had to be equipped prior to casting. For example, equip fast cast gear, cast aspir, swap in dark magic + int ect mid-cast and get the benefit from both.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I need to re-do macros to account for new gear.
Edit: just reread the above post. So fast cast is cast and recast time, and needs to be equiped precast. Haste is just recast time and can be put on midcast?

yes.
There are two parts to fast-cast: lowered casting time, and lowered recast time. Haste is only lowered recast time.
Your recast is calculated when the spell fires, so you need to be wearing haste and fastcast gear when the spell actually goes off to get the lowered recast time.
Casting speed is calculated when you start casting the spell, so fast-cast needs to be worn before the spell begins if you want the spell to cast more quickly.

It should be noted that the recast reduction from 5% Fast Cast isn't the same as the recast reduction from 5% Haste. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe the recast reduction from 5% Fast Cast is the equivalent of 2.5% Haste.
There's a good thread on BG where we've been discussing this topic. Short answer is that you can swap in Fastcast, cast your spell, and swap back out. However, there are some tricky bits regarding how the various methods of targeting and such affect the operation of the macro, and that not everything will work as expected:
