After being humbled at my first attempt in Abyssea as a Dancer, I've come to the conclusion I really need to put some more work into my gear. So at the same time, I'm revisiting my Scholar gear, which I know isn't the best, but has been fine for me thus far. After getting my 99 cap quest done last night, I figured one of the first things I need to work on is getting my enhancing magic as high as possible for Embrava (since we're all Embrava whores at one point or another!) And looking through the wiki, the magic number seems to be 500 to ensure you get a full power Embrava off.

However, I'm struggling to see how to actually get to that number - admittedly this is based off FFXIclopedia so may be out of date, but these are the items I can see and the effect they each have.

Base Enhancing Magic @ Level 99: 404 with Light Arts active
Full Enhancing Magic merits: +16 to 420
Fulcio Grip (Sub): +2 to 422
Savant's Bonnet +2 (Head): +10 to 432
Colossus's Torque (Neck): +7 to 439
Anhur Robe (Body): +12 to 451
Augur's Gloves (Hands): +5 to 456
Scholar's Pants +1 (Legs): +15 to 471
Rubeus Boots (Feet): +10 to 481
Merciful Cape (Back): +5 to 486
Cascade Belt (Waist): +3 to 489
Augmenting Earring (Earring): +3 to 492

That's still 8 points short. The two items below are items you can _possibly_ get augments on with enhancing magic which would combine to put you over the edge:
Aptus Earring (Earring): +2 to 494
Kirin's Pole (Main): +1~12 to 495-506

Am I missing something with this or to actually hit the magical 500 number on Scholar do we need items like Kirin's Pole and hope for a good augment?

Okay, done a little more research, looked up Kirin's Pole on FFXIAH and saw this:

So guess that yes, it's needed. For the synergy side though, can you reaugment it if you don't get the level of enhancing magic needed? Or is it cumulative? (i.e., augment with multiple Genbu scraps to build up the augment level?)

It's not cumulative, but you can re-augment it if you don't get the desired amount of skill. When the new synergy is completed, you'll see the new results, and then before you take the item out, you can choose to keep the new results or the old results.

For example, say I get Enhancing +5 on my staff but I'm looking for +12. I start the synergy process again with the same staff and a new scrap, but the process doesn't give me any Enhancing skill on it this time around. When I go to take out the staff from the furnace, I'll choose to keep the original augments rather than the new augments from that last synergy attempt, and my staff will still have the +5 Enhancing on it.

Ah, okay, that makes sense then. So it's still random, but you've essentially got the option of not going backwards.

there's a better belt option as well - olympus sash for +5, and hands are normally v3+1 or +2 for the enhanced duration they offer. iirc you wont need it or the earring if you can get over 9(?) on kirin's pole. there's a thread on ffxiah about it

edit: there's +4 skill on v3 ammo

While 500 enhancing is a goal al SCHs should have in mind, 420+ is the bare minimum, as it's the amount of enhancing that will cap magic haste when combined with the Haste spell. As for enhancing sets to get you to 500, there's not much leniency, but you can even achieve it without Kirin's pole, if you use the augmented AF2+2 bonus to enlightenment (gives +10 to all magic skills for the spell cast under the effect of the job ability for a 5/5 enlightenment). You'll still have to get some crappy drops like rubeus boots and/or anhur robe, and/or augmented pole, but it gives you some leniency in gear, in exchange of only one 500 skill embrava per 2H.

Regarding your equipment list, you forgot an easy +4, from SCH's empyrean acessory, the Savant's Tretise, in the ammo slot.

Other than that, you should aim for a well rounded SCH, don't get blinded for the 500 enhancing skill. Solid healing and nuking sets are very necessary, and it's becoming increasingly important to have a good stun set also, for things like some VW fights (Kalasutrax, Provenance Watcher), all Legion, and it's really useful in Abyssea, too.

You could borrow some ideas from the sets I have posted in ffxiah, here (I know it sounds pompous to put your own gear as an example, but I can't help but being proud of my SCH). Not perfect, since they lack the Neo Nyzul stuff, and some other pieces, but it's still quite good.

Edit: Ashthecat already mentioned the empy ammo on his post. I shouldn't have threads open for hours without refreshing before replying. Lesson learned? Hah! I wish.

Being a well rounded magic job, I get the importance of having a number of different sets for each different thing we do, don't think I'm unduly focusing on enhancing magic ^^ It was more a case of I was reading up on Embrava and saw that 500 figure which seemed high, so I thought I'd see how exactly one would go about hitting that number, hence the post.

And nothing pompous about it ^^ After my humbling experience with Dancer, I've realised that despite the fact I feel I'm a reasonably good Scholar (admittedly that's probably a slightly inflated opinion since I haven't done much end game with it), my gear isn't anywhere near where it needs to be to actually be anything more than run of the mill. So happy to take any advice I can get at this point - my main focus right now needs to be my AF3+2 though, that's going to be the biggest shift I can do in the short term.

Another thing to keep in mind:

When using Embrava you'll probably be using it along with Perpetuance, which means you'll really want to have AF3+2 hands on for the extra 2.5 minutes duration instead of Augur.

I was going to post up an 'ideal' set based on the feedback here, but that FFXIAH post has a lot more information on it than I can put together, so I won't bother and just tell anyone interested in this topic to read that post, it's good ^^
