I'm tossing around some ideas at the moment for my next 75. I have a pretty good handle SCH I believe, but I have a couple questions for ya'll.

The big question is: how desirable is SCH in Salvage? I don't really have a 'salvage job' at the moment and it would be nice to have one. Im not asking if we can perform well, but your experiences getting into groups with your SCH.

Sub question: How gimp will I be never getting any Dynamis bits for my SCH? There is about a 0.01% chance of me attending Dynamis ever again. Hands, Pants, Body and Head actually look really nice for various things.

short answer: prefer whm/rdm over sch

SCH needs JA to really work
JA cells can be in short supply
SCH doesnt have haste.

As a 75 scholar, and a member of an avid salvage group, I'd like to share my experiences to help answer your question.

Assuming you aren't leveling scholar just for salvage, and you have other reasons by leveling it, by all means, do it. Scholar is a powerful job in salvage. On the lower floors, the stoneskin/phalanx/and enspells make you both nearly invincible and adds to the party's overall damage on mobs. Although scholar -can- be a cell-intensive job, It really pays off. Besides, if you are using a smaller, more experienced group, the cells should not be a problem. My group has 6 constant members for most NM's in salvage, and usually 7, maybe 8 if we focus on a boss run.

As far as not having haste... Yes, haste is important, however, for most big NMs, as well as bosses, It's usually wise to bring more than one mage anyhow. A red mage or whm will suffice and compliment the scholar very well.

Also, lets not forget the fact that scholar can be a pinch-hitter for nuking as well, which can be useful for several feats, such as QQ Astrologers, Magic bursting any skillchains done to speed up kills. (specifically, the gears in B. Remnants to gimp homing missile), and for those squishy flan, just to name a few.

If you are in a salvage group that will fail to see the advantages of having a scholar in salvage, perhaps you should educate them.

Our run normally consists of having the scholar take the first ability, magic, and subjob out of the chest. From there, It's all smoothly done.

As stated before, If you are leveling scholar for reasons other than salvage, by all means, do it, and reap the benefits in salvage. If you are just looking for a job that you plan on using in salvage, it may be more beneficial to level whm or rdm to fit the role a little better. It's all dependant on how you play, and what you enjoy.

Hope this little bit helps!

p.s. As for your sub question... You won't be gimp missing the sch relic. It's very nice as a whole, but you can function just fine without it. The key piece, IMHO though, is the body. Still, it's a luxery. You'll survive just fine without relic if you don't attend dynamis.

^Pretty much what Duel said. I'm in a salvage group that goes 6 days a week and with WHM75 and SCH75, both fully merited, the only time I go WHM is ZR boss because I feel I have better control over discoid with it than with SCH, but even then I'm sure SCH would do fine. We always roll with RDM + me on whm or sch, and never really have problems lacking haste or anything.

SCH is a cell intensive job for sure, but it definitely pays off. Stoneskin and more so in my opinion phalanx are invaluable and really help the damage mitigation, and if you run with 2~ mnks the enspellga dmg REALLY boosts kill speed.

As far as your relic question goes, no, you wont be gimp or anything without the relic, but it's definitely awesome gear to have. I really really suggest at least attending some dyna beau's because at least on bismarck argute gown RAINS from beauc, so it honestly shouldn't be THAT hard to get.

I agree! on Asura, the sch body rains from the sky as well! The particular run in which I got my body, we had six drops! Hopefully scholars of other servers have similar luck, as it's a lovely piece!

I appreciate all the info, thanks everyone.

Also, no I'm not just leveling SCH for Salvage lol. I have a pretty good handle on what the job can do, but I was fairly cuirous what the community thought of it there. I don't know anyone that actually runs a group anymore to get their thoughts.

Lacking haste is a plus for me. I might not be to popular for saying this but I don't want to level a job that will turn me into haste and/or refresh bitch for the rest of my FFXI life, but I would like to have the utility of SCH for events / missions and so on.

1) Give scholar first magic, JA, and subjob cells
2) Basically become invincible for the rest of the run
3) ???
4) Profit

Any combination of Regen 2ga, phalanxga, stoneskinga, and enspellga decimates first-through-third floor mobs

You shouldnt be the only mage on salvage, so the lack of haste shouldnt be a issue. If you are the only mage in a salvage group, you have bigger problems.

Anyway, the only real issue SCH faces on salvage is that they need everything mages need + JA. If cells are in short supply ( especially JAs ), then it might be a problem.

RDM > SCH

But, SCH is still useful. I used to do it before I had RDM up.. but now I'd never go back.

SS+Phalanx+Enspell is great, but Phalanx2+Haste is just as effective on the earlier floors, and RDM has alot more tools that make it more useful over SCH on the later floors. SCH is a great job for a second mage (though I'd take a COR over it in a heartbeat - DRK MNK THF COR BRD RDM tears anything apart).

But if you're just doing ramparts, go SCH and be lazy.
