I've just returned to the game recently and started Scholar cause it seems really neat. I understand that generally Scholar's are main healers which I'm more than happy to be. My problem though is lately my groups have healers so I fill the BLM role it seems. But the dmg my spells do seems really really weak by comparison. I understand that I won't be matching a blm. But my offensive spells are doing about as much dmg as melee strikes from the other dmg dealers. I'm currently Lv22 fighting worms in Qufim usually. Is this normal for Scholars? It seems weird that a B+ magic skill is doing so little in dmg.

Use Melon/Apple pies, +1s if you can afford it, make sure you nuking with int gear (ermites rings and the like) and not the mnd gear you should be using when you're main healing, and keep an eye on mob type resistences/strengths and the day of the week.

I love scholar, I leveled it before the sublimation patch, knowing fully that it would be an exceptional job for a wide variety of situations with unique abilities that would make it a valuable asset to virtually any group. Compound that with the sheer level of -fun- that the job offers and I can readily recommend leveling it to anyone, regardless of having another mage job leveled or not.

All of that being said, when people ask about scholar I present them with one disclaimer, sometimes offered even if they are just casually complaining about something regarding the job. Scholar is boring and pretty much sucks at everything until 40. Obtaining nukes far after they are really viable and having to wait even longer than rdm to get key restorative spells means that a low level scholar will have a hard time performing well in any single capacity.

Be patient, because once you do have access to manifestation and accession, you'll be addicted. Good luck and have fun with the job!

To do good damage at low level you must gear yourself like a BLM. INT on every slot possible, HQ if possible, and food. Not only will this help with your damage, but also with your resists.

Also, don't forget to /BLM if you're looking for damage from 20-40. Magic Attack Bonus 1 is just huge.

Like the others have said, SCH doesn't really start until level 40. However, at 36 you might find yourself being a powerhouse. Sublimation, and aspir when fighting beetles is just awesome

It is better wither to be silent, or to say things of more value than silence. Sooner throw a pearl at hazard than an idle or useless word; and do not say a little in many words, but a great deal in a few.
