Grips and food options?Follow

Recently there have been a number of people in my LS all leveling SCH. I have never leveled a mage job before, so I keep asking mages I know for advice. Generally, we agree on nearly all discussions about gear and offer each other play advice. However, there are two areas that seem to bog us down, grips and food.

As far as SCH there seem to be 2 grip options, bugard strap+1 or use both lightning and ice grip for nukes. I've also been advised that the grips enhance magic potency even of non-elemental spells, so that dark grip would be good for aspirs and earth grip for slow. What grips do you use on your SCH and why?

My second question is on food. I've been swearing my wizard cookies since dunes, but with the dependability of sublimation to keep mp up, I've been recommended to use pies or other mage food, but am not if these have any real benefits over mph. What food do you use and why?

I personally use Buguard Strap +1 for everything related to damage. Only other strap I carry around is the Dark Grip for Sleep/Aspir/Drain. I have considered getting an Ice grip for stuff like ouryu tho.

As for food, it depends. Cookies are always good, but not always better. Melon Pie +1 is a good all around food, and Creampuffs are for when you absolutely need to do the best damage.
Do keep in mind that sometimes our own MP efficiency will keep us running enough to warrant skipping Cookies. Stuff like dynamis and limbus (Free refils), or Ouryu (Time to rest/aspirEles), will you get more out of creampuffs.

Also, anything where you are doing timed nukes with the BLM's: you can go ahead and use creampuffs since more likely than not you'll have a over half an MP pool each time they're empty. And you will get it back before they're ready; making the extra hMP not as useful.

As far as grips go, I actually carry the elemental grips, the bugard strap +1, and the raptor strap +1. Which I use depends entirely on what I'm doing. I have the raptor strap +1 in my healing macros. For nukes and enfeebles, I typically use the elementals, unless I'm positive resists won't be a problem or I need to go max damage. If that's the case, I'll switch to the bugard strap +1.

What food I use also depends on what I'm doing. If I'm going to be switching arts often and feel deaths will be few, I like to use Sophic Stew (or Brain Stew if I can't get my hands on the HQ. Been kinda rare on Phoenix lately). If mainly healing/buffing, I'll opt for the Mushroom Stew for the mnd, -enm, and hmp. If I'm sure to die several times (Dynamis, etc), I'll go with the shorter, less expensive foods like Cream Puffs and Melon Pie +1.

As far as food goes it depends on what you are going to be doing. Cream Puffs offer 7INT which will maximize your damage output for fairly cheaply. If you are in Light Arts focus, Mushroom foods for enmity are nice, or marron glace for maximum MP builds.

For grips, Bugard Leather +1 is your best max damage nuking grip. The elemental grips come into play for resisted nuking situations, enfeebling magic, or dark magic. I generally carry ice, wind, thunder, and dark at all times thanks to the satchel. I also carry around a Staff Strap for when I am healing to stack towards -50enmity build.

INT vs. hMP
(this is geared more toward the leveling sch, and not so much the end game sch)

I noticed this in a level sync party ~45. I had been soloing from 43-48, so I hadn't really noticed the impact, but in that one party it became painfully obvious. Pre-stoneskin, sublimation isn't a "self refresh", but rather a "personal ether tank".

Since you can't rest with it charging yet, it's a matter of stand up > charge > do your stuff > use again to gain 20-80 mp > rest > lather > rinse > repeat.

You end up getting small chunks of mp back, but I found myself resting a lot of the mp back. Eventually, I just gave up with Sublimation and let the RDM keep me refreshed.

In a situation like this, if/when MP is going to be crucial, grabbing that cookie jar in lieu of the pie pan might be a better option. once you get stoneskin, or at least 51 (Clear Mind3+Pluto's) then INT should be your primary food-source. As soon as I hit 51, MP regen was no longer an issue for me.
