right now I am leveling up black mage as a sub job for red or white, if i go scholar it seems like I wont use this at all. is red mage really the most beneficial for scholars till 75 or is it better for me to level up white mage? eventually i will do both but first I just want to unlock the class. Thanks in advance for the help

/WHM is much stronger than RDM until RDM gives you stoneskin (68SCH/34RDM). So you definetly need both. From 68+ though, RDM is your go-to subjob

I agree /WHM > /RDM until 68 if the PT as a whole is taking damage (AoEs). In PTs where the tank had solid hate and there aren't AoEs I preferred being able to Enspellra the whole PT to up their damage as opposed to slightly reducing the tanks total damage taken.

what i do is below sub 56 rdm for enspells, from 56 - 67 its really situational.. with a pld tank ill do redmage for enspells, stoneskin isnt going to last long enough with one to be worth the charges/casting time, and potentially messes up their hate from loss of chance to self cure.. nin tank i sub whm for stoneskin to give it extra time while waiting on recast timers for utsemi and it doesent interupt their casting. 68+ its rdm because i can both enspell and stoneskin.

BLM sub can be useful for the mab from 20-40 if you want to fulfill the nuker role. However, it is usually more efficient for SCH to heal so from 32-40 I would suggest /WHM for curaga. At 40, you get accession which basically renders curagas obsolete. After 40, I did what wildsienna did.

Another bonus to having /WHM from 58-68 is that you can stoneskin yourself to rest with sublimation charging.

There's a period between 56 and 68 where WHM is the better sub for xp. RDM will provide you with a wider range of enfeebles than WHM sub, so things like Bind and Blind come from /RDM but you'll get Slow, Silence and Paralyze from both.

Gravity kicks in at level 38 which is a nice one to have and the Enspells start to kick in from level 40.

I wouldn't say you *need* RDM sub initially and certainly 1-10 you might argue WHM is better but I'd say the point at which you might start wanting /RDM is from 40 when you start to accession things like grav and enspells.

I know this is mean towards parties but why bother lfp? With the EXP boost to Easy Prey and Decent Challenges you can get about as much EXP as a dunes party will get unless they are really good or have a BRD PL to make up for a not so good party. Bring a WHM club, gear, and you're good to go. Eat a Jack o' Lantern and you're really set then ACC shuold be capped on EP-DC that way assuming you have some club skill if not you'll get it while fighting them.

At 12 you could use the Worm camp in Highlands, very nice camp and very safe unless somehow you get close enough to the ghost in the cave at night or the elemental in there and magic aggro it.

Only bit of warning is that it only supports 1 player maybe 2 if they're slow at killing.

I'd suggest taking BLM into the 20s, no higher for now unless you're going to need it for something else. MAB is nice and all, but you'll be doing steadily less nuking in parties as you work your way into the 40s, and RDM gives MAB I after 40 anyway. RDM pretty much dominates from there, outside the 56-67 band when only WHM gives you stoneskin.
Soloing for experience is another story, tactics-wise, but pretty similar in terms of SJ choices. Gravity is handy on pets and elementals, and vital on fleas, which like to resist Bind at the worst possible times.
SCH/BLM's chance to shine comes in Dynamis and other major events, where ES and Sleepga give an extra Sleep cooldown that doesn't burn off a charge.

Minor correction Gravity is 42+ while the first enspell is available at 32 and every 4 levels after except for enwater which decides to skip 6 levels. >.> if your point on enspells was enaero was first one useful for the mobs you're fighting.... sorry can't argue much with that. ;p

When I lvd up SCH and hit 75 1st week of Feb 2007, I used WHM up untill 66ish 67ish then switched to /rdm. Works great for almost any situation. Only thing I like haveing SCH/whm for is the ability to one shot cure a PLD,MNK or anyone having high HP, for 1400+ HP in one cure. Rapture, Divine Seal Apollo's staff cure IV go! My highest cure is 1421 in sky, and of course it was hate from **** lol, but the WHM's were like wtf! lol.

/RDM is the go to like everyone says after a certain point. /blm or /whm is optional, and depending on what you are doing.

I would go WTF too. How did you managed to take the time to DS, Rapture, and still Cure a tank in red before everyone else? <_<

Altho I must admit, I am guilty of letting random DD's dip in a little to get bigger e-peen cure V's on tenemos. I even got a MNK friend who gears up his MNK Afv2 to help :3

I too usually request a lvl sync 56+ for SS (dont really like non AU areas... lose refresh sanction... colibri are nice and squishy, exp bonus... etc...)

but I usually /whm also with pretty much any tank... however i'll try subbing RDM more often now with PLD tanks and add in the Damage via enspells to help things go smoothly.

CUrrently so close to hitting 70... (less chances a sync will be 68 + for all /RDM sub goodness) so im still in that pha\se where i have to see 1. what in syncing at... and 2. what set up/ tank I Have

Question to all the more experienced SCH out there:

how viable am I in a typical merit PT? Like for example, a BRD and COR definitely work there, just like a RDM... they're sort of like staples to me in 75 merit PT's

Knowing that fast exp occurs in merits parties and the usual 7k-9k is "good" in non TP burn parties chaining VT's... other than having a RDM BRD and/or COR at my beck and call... what are my chances of getting invites to these 72+ merit/TP burn PT's?

just wondering because although i have seen a few wandering around with the decked out MNK's WAR's NIN's SAM's etc... with the usual RDM/COR/BRD in tow... I would like to know how likely I am to getting an invite to these types of "endgame" parties...

Pushing 30k+ exp per lvl at 69 (and getting higher as i lvl up) in synced parties is still exp and all... but If i can get it a bit faster in a non-synced party then I'm all for it.

The last thing I consider myself in this game is a TH-*****, period. I'd rather solo 30,000xp than be invited to an XP because TH2 was cool to have around. I've spent far too much time doing my best to become adept at playing/gearing THF only to be pigeon-holed by a passive trait that's often used as a scapegoat when random luck screws other players out of what they think the game owes them. :/

I can go one better...

Aurorastorm, Lightsday, Korin Obi, Light Staff, Rapture, Divine Seal, Accession, Cure IV. In Campaign Battle. Targeting an NPC.

For those who aren't aware, curing an NPC in Campaign using Accession dumps a massive AoE cure on EVERY allied target close to that NPC, whether player or NPC. It's an exellent way to rack up points. But I don't think Jagidbod was very pleased with my efforts. He hounded me around the fort for AGES before I went down!

Truthfully? Besides missing Haste, which some melee's will cry like a baby without (It's quite funny actually -- you should try it someday!), we're actually pretty damned good in merits. Especially for Colibri camps, where we even outshine Red Mages in my humble opinion.

With a combination of Phalanx + Stoneskin, the melee's will barely get scratched, leaving you with ample MP for Enblizzards (or match current day, but NO EnAero -- it's resisted to **** on those birds) and the occasional cures. I rarely ever have to drop for heals, Sublimation takes care of most of that, and when I do it's usually down to over-excited melee's being jackasses.

You won't find much call for your Dark Arts abilities in a merit party, unless you join a manaburn (which are a lot of fun, but slower XP than birdies). So stick in Light Arts with Addendum up so you can erase the occasional Elegy from your hapless BRD when the dumb bird decides to play the Mimic game.

We are the best healers for merits, but because of lack of haste, we are not the "fastest healers". So don't expect to get invites over a RDM or a good WHM/SCH.

To be fair, melee "crying like a baby" for haste in a merit party is a lot like a pld "crying like a baby" for refresh
